New reception building for Karl May Museum: groundbreaking today in Radebeul

Radebeul, Deutschland - On December 1, 2023, the first groundbreaking ceremony for a new reception building at the Karl May Museum was completed in the fully occupied framework of the celebrations for the 96th birthday of the Radebeul Indian Museum. Mayor Bert Wendsche described the new building as a decisive milestone for the museum and emphasizes how important the investment for the long -term preservation of the cultural heritage is. "We are committed together with the funding providers to maintain history, which is firmly rooted here in Radebeul," clarifies Wendsche.

The groundbreaking marks the official start of the construction work, whereby the shell construction work is supposed to start on July 7th. The project has a total volume of 6.5 million euros. Of this, over 2.7 million euros from the federal and state governments flow into funding, while the city of Radebeul makes its contribution of one million euros from the urban budget. This extensive support shows that the project has a high priority on both municipal and higher levels. In addition to the city, a foundation will also participate in the costs with 56,000 euros.

a new room for the culture

The new building will be more than just a reception building: a special exhibition room and an extended depot are planned. The construction period is expected to be two years, so that visitors will soon be able to discover the exciting stories and exhibits around Karl May in a modern environment.

Who was Karl May? The writer, born in Hohenstein-Ernstthal in 1842, shaped the "Wild West" with his adventurous stories. The Winnetou books and many other novels have made it one of the most read German-speaking authors. From 1888 until his death in 1912, May lived in Radebeul, where his literary works were also created. The museum, which goes back to an initiative of his second wife Klara, was opened in 1928 and has since developed into a cultural treasure.

preserve a legacy

The Karl May Museum today shows around 4,000 exhibits, of which around 800 pieces are exhibited. The collection, which Mays widow acquired from Patty Frank in 1926, was particularly remarkable: these were around 500 objects on the culture and way of life of North American Indians, which laid the foundation for the museum. A national Indian exhibition was built on the ground floor of a log house on May in 1928, which offers valuable insights into the life of the author over the years.

Overall, the museum attracts around 55,000 visitors every year and is of great importance both regionally and nationally. The upcoming reception building will continue to support this success and create a modern framework for the ongoing fascination of the Karl May world. Now we are all looking forward to the progress in construction so that we can soon immerse yourself in the exciting world of Karl May.

While the new reception building takes shape, the view of the factory history and the cultural heritage of Karl May remains. The cooperation between the city, the federal and state governments makes it clear that a good knack for the future is proven to protect and further expand the legacy of the popular writer.
