New health center in Gröditz: Doctors are fighting the shortage!
In recent years, health care in rural areas has proven increasingly challenging. In order to counteract the impending shortage of doctors in Gröditz, Henry Wendt, an entrepreneur from the region, has shown initiative. With a lot of commitment, he renovated a run-down building on Marktstrasse and converted it into a now thriving health center. The renovation took 1.5 years and created not only two general medical practices, but also a specialist outpatient clinic that guarantees both inpatient and outpatient care. DieSachsen reports that the modernized rooms not only impress with their architecture, but are also equipped with contemporary heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology, which ensures a pleasant working environment.
A further step towards improving medical care was taken with the support of Dr. Ekkehard Mrosk and Robert Kaubisch, two general practitioners who were recruited for this pilot project. In addition, the Elblandklinikum Riesa has four specialists available, each of whom is available for consultations one day per week. Sächsische emphasizes that this initiative is unique in Saxony, as it has an institute outpatient clinic for four specialist areas such as orthopedics, Pediatrics, vascular medicine and urology.
Unique concept for Gröditz
Approval for this project was anything but easy, as hospitalists are typically tied to the hospital. The Saxony Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVS) finally granted permission for this innovative collaboration, which paved the way for the establishment of a health center that could potentially serve as an example for other regions. The high demand for medical services in particular shows that the center's order books are already well filled. This suggests that such a model has a positive response in rural areas and is urgently needed.
Since April 2025, the institute outpatient clinic has been staffed by the Elbland Clinic. Carmen Baumgart from KVS also supported this pilot project. The future looks promising: The project is initially scheduled to last two years, with the hope that this model will become established in the long term. The doctors in the health center offer the following consultation hours during the week:
| day | Specialist |
|---|---|
| Monday | Dr. Kathleen Hartig (orthopedics and trauma surgery) |
| Wednesday | Dr. Jordy Gruhl (pediatrics) |
| Wednesday | Dr. Rainer Waßmer (vascular medicine) |
| Thursday | Dr. Michael Frenzel (Urology) |
The investment in healthcare in Gröditz shows that it is possible to change old structures and meet the needs of the population. Sustainable healthcare solutions like these are crucial to ensuring quality care in the future.
