Forest fire in Gohrischheide: evacuations and large-scale deployment of the fire department!
A serious forest fire is raging in the Gohrischheide, a forest area on the border between Saxony and Brandenburg, which is still not under control. Loud zeit.de The emergency services have increased the number to 480 to fight the flames, which are spreading mainly in a northerly direction. The situation is particularly critical in the Nieska district, where the fire brigade is fighting tirelessly.
The situation has worsened dramatically; the fire has now spread to at least 600 hectares. The emergency services have to clear more than 200 hectares of forest area, with two districts, Heidehäuser and Lichtensee, having to be evacuated. This evacuation began on Wednesday evening and affects around 100 people, including 45 residents of a home for severely disabled people, such as t-online.de reported.
Combat operation against the flames
The fire department has endured difficult times as conditions are far from ideal. Dry vegetation and light winds promote the spread of the fire. A warning was issued via the Nina app so that the residents of Lichtensee should leave the buildings immediately. Fortunately, the evacuation in Lichtensee was averted due to a shift in the wind, but the situation remains tense.
In order to deal with the situation, the use of fire-fighting helicopters is being examined. However, this is done taking into account the dangerous conditions in the fire area, as there may be ammunition there that could be dangerous due to the explosive ordnance disposal service's nearby blast site.
Injured emergency services and environmental consequences
The news is also bitter that two firefighters from Brandenburg suffered severe burns and are now under the care of doctors. This shows once again that the fight against the elemental forces of nature is very risky.
The effects of such forest fires are felt not only locally, but also globally. As in a publication by Austrian Academy of Sciences As explained, large forest fires alter surface albedo and release numerous greenhouse gases. These gases, particularly carbon dioxide and aerosols, influence atmospheric chemistry and can even penetrate into the stratosphere. This has implications that extend far beyond the immediate region. In addition, the frequency of such fires could increase due to climate change, which makes the issue all the more relevant.
The incident is not the first of its kind in Gohrischheide, as there have been several fires in the past, but the region was most recently confronted with the largest forest fire in Saxony in 30 years in June 2022.
The situation remains tense and the fire brigade and emergency services are working around the clock to contain the fire and ensure the safety of residents. In such moments it becomes clear how important it is to intervene quickly in order to minimize damage.
