Alarming fountain water: Over 40% of the samples too high nitrate content!
Roßwein, Deutschland - The quality of the fountain water in Central Saxony is again in focus, and the numbers are alarming: loud [Sächsische.de] (https://www.saechische.de/lokales/Mittelsachsen/Rosswein/brunnenwasser-in-mittelsachsen-ueber--probe-mit-zu-hohem-nitrathalt-4mbntfncjdo3k5db2Gyi.html) shows an analysis of the water samples that more than 40 percent of the water sample tested wells in the region exceed the permissible limit values of 50 mg/l nitrate. This data comes from extensive examinations that were carried out by VSR water protection between 2019 and 2024.
It should be emphasized that 4.4 percent of the wells even had values of over 100 mg/l. This is not only a significant health risk, but also a challenge for local agriculture. Last year, more than 50 water samples were tested by concerned citizens in Leisnig, and frighteningly, every second sample exceeded the nitrate limits.
fountain water analysis on the marketplace
To help the well owners in the region, a Labormobil of VSR water protection will be stationed on the marketplace in Roßwein on Tuesday, July 22nd, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Here the owners have the option of submitting their water samples for analysis. For only 12 euros per sample you will receive a detailed evaluation that provides information about the nitrate pollution and possible pollutants such as pesticides.
After the analysis, the water owners not only receive the results, but also valuable advice for the safe use of their water. Whether for vegetable watering or pond filling: the recommendations are comprehensive, with special analysis options also offered against a small cost share.
The causes of the loads
The causes of the high nitrate pollution are complex, but there are clear indications. The excessive use of fertilizer in intensive agriculture is one of the main causes for the increased nitrate values in the fountain water. According to vsr water protection, unencumbered groundwater values are usually below 8 mg/l. In areas with a high proportion of settlement and traffic areas, however, the nitrate loads are lower.
The consequences of these high values are serious. Nitrate can be converted into nitrite in the human body, which creates carcinogenic substances. This is particularly dangerous for infants whose oxygen transport can be blocked in the blood. In addition, a high nitrate concentration in the pond water leads to massive algae growth, which in turn can reduce the oxygen content of the water and lead to fish death.
Overall, it shows that there is definitely a need for action, not only for individual health, but also for the ecological framework of the region. It is therefore worthwhile to have a vigilant eye on the quality of our water and use the tests offered.
