A look behind bars: This is how visitors experience everyday prison life in Waldheim!

On Saturday, the Waldheim correctional facility (JVA) was an absolute magnet for curious people. The large crowds for the information day brought together many interested people who patiently waited to be admitted. Seeing how contact was made between visitors and prisoners left a lasting impression on those present.

But not everything went without restrictions. The strict rules at the entrance did not deter visitors, which shows that interest in life behind bars remains undiminished. Cell phones were left outside - because making unauthorized contact can cost a fine of up to 1,500 euros. An attendant informed those waiting about the applicable guidelines to ensure everything went smoothly.

Visitation rules for prisoners

Visitors must show a valid photo ID when entering the institution. This regulation also applies to children and young people, who must also have a corresponding document with them. To avoid delays, you should also arrive on time - ideally 30 minutes before your scheduled visit.

Another important point is that in many correctional facilities, such as the JVA Konstanz, there are only a limited number of visits per inmate. Here, visitors can have a one-hour visit or two Skype sessions of 30 minutes each every 14 days. Visits are also possible on certain days, although contact on Sundays and public holidays is usually only via Skype.

Practical information for visitors

In the Konstanz Correctional Facility, a maximum of three visitors per inmate are allowed to attend at the same time, with children aged two and over also counting. In addition, for people under 18 years of age, a written consent form from a legal guardian is required if they come without one.

All visitors must observe security measures, which include searches. Individual visitors will be denied access if, for example, they carry prohibited items or violate the rules. In these cases, not only can the visit be canceled, but administrative offense proceedings can also be initiated.

An additional focus is on the financial side of the visit: in some institutions, cigarettes and sweets worth 16 euros can be purchased before the visit. However, this is not permitted everywhere. The remaining money must remain in the institution during the visit and may not be handed over to the prisoners.

In summary, it can be said that interest in the information offered by prisons remains high. Visitors not only get an insight into the lives of the prisoners, but also learn about the strict rules and procedures that characterize life in a prison.
