Decline in births in Central Saxony: Clinics in the fight for newborns!

A look at the birth rates in Central Saxony reveals a worrying trend: In 2023, only 1,673 children were born in the entire district, while the number of deaths rose to 4,578. The State Statistical Office is already talking about the highest birth deficit since 1996. But not all hospitals seem to be affected by this trend. Various maternity clinics in Central Saxony report stable or even slightly increasing numbers of births.

The Mittweida Clinic, for example, decided to record an increase in the number of births in 2024. An impressive 485 births were registered this year, which means an increase of 17 newborns compared to the previous year. Familiar faces among the new arrivals included Marlo Frieden, who was born on January 2nd, and twins Maxwell and Charlie, who began the next chapter of their family story just hours later. Particular attention was paid to the fact that boys were clearly in the majority with 262 births.

Stability and new offers

On closer inspection, the situation in the clinics is mixed. While the number of births at the Chemnitz Clinic fell slightly from January to July 2024, the Elbland Clinic Riesa saw its numbers remain constant. With 223 births in the first half of 2023 and 215 in 2025, the difference remains small. The opening of new delivery rooms and wards, which are intended to ensure obstetric care in the region, is encouraging.

The Freiberg Hospital also reports an increase from 529 to 597 births for 2024. Although the decline in the number of births also has an impact on the income of freelance midwives, there seems to be a certain feeling of confidence at the Mittweida Clinic. With the aim of further stabilizing birth rates, a new gynecological and obstetric ward will be implemented by 2026.

A worrying trend

In view of social changes, it is important to understand the reasons behind the decline in birth rates. The decision to have children is strongly linked to the age of the mother. While in the past many girls between the ages of 19 and 27 became mothers, today the situation is completely different. The average age of mothers has shifted, which has led to a flattening of the birth curve. This development has been evident since the 1990s and reached a worrying dimension with a low point in 1994.

Now it’s time to look ahead. The clinics are taking on the challenge of not only offering high-quality obstetric care, but also introducing innovative offerings such as Kinesio taping for pregnant women in order to provide expectant mothers with the best possible support.

In times when the demand for pediatric services is extremely high, it is clear: There is a lot to be done to counteract the decline in birth rates in Central Saxony. The clinics are working to expand their capacities and offerings. A development that should be in everyone’s interest.
