Bright prospects” in Freiberg: cartoons about the environment and justice
The Freiberg City Library opened the exhibition “Shining Prospects” on October 16th. This exciting show shows a total of 63 caricatures by well-known German artists. The works shown deal with central issues of our time: environment, climate, poverty, hunger, courage and justice. The exhibition is open until November 25th and invites everyone interested to consider these important questions. [Blick](https://www.blick.de/mittelsachsen/glaenzende- outlooken-in-der-freiberger-stadtbibliothek-artikel13994413) reports on the ceremonial opening, at which numerous prominent guests were present, including Uwe Krumbiegel and Bernadette Albrecht.
The idea for this exhibition has a long history. It was originally launched by Misereor around ten years ago. Due to its great success, it has now become a traveling exhibition that can be seen throughout Germany. What is particularly noteworthy is that many of the works on display are still highly relevant today and raise relevant questions about global responsibility.
Insights into the ecological footprint
In addition to the caricatures, an “ecological footprint course” was developed in Freiberg. Over three floors, this course addresses questions about our lifestyle. Aspects such as nutrition and mobility are examined. Visitors are encouraged to think about their own ecological impact. Such initiatives are important because they raise awareness of our own responsibility in the context of climate change.
The exhibition is also complemented by a varied supporting program. On October 18th, creative minds can make a climate scale from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., while the lecture “Water between Abundance and Need” will take place on October 21st at 6 p.m. The author Frauke Angel will read from her book “Hunderunde – How far we go for our clothes” on October 24th. The adult education center's event on October 29th will also be particularly exciting, dealing with the values of our time.
Critical cartoons and important messages
An important part of the exhibition are the caricatures by Gerhard Mester, an artist who critically examines the insanity of the lifestyle. His works are shaking things up and are aimed directly at industry, fossil energy producers and also at citizens. In his drawings, Mester addresses the need to stop climate change and puts his finger on the wound of the pretexts that are often used as arguments for fossil energy production. SFV emphasizes that his works are intended to encourage people to think about sustainable alternatives and to develop a future without fossil fuels.
The show is rounded off by further caricatures that were created in collaboration between the Archdiocese of Bamberg and MISEREOR. These 99 cartoons offer surprising perspectives on current social challenges. They encourage you to think about individual behavior and the global political context. [Global Learning](https://www.globaleslernen.de/de/bildungsmaterial/börsen-kisten-koffer/glaenzende- outlooken-99-karikaturen-zu-klima-verbrauch-und-anderen-katastrophen) emphasizes that the exhibition can also be borrowed to support educational institutions in addressing climate issues.
Overall, the “Bright Prospects” exhibition offers a valuable opportunity to address the pressing issues of our time and to consider how we ourselves can contribute to improving the situation.
