Flood warning for Dresden: Elbe water levels are rising dramatically!

On October 8, 2025, the focus will be on the water levels of the Elbe, one of the largest rivers in Europe, which flows from the Czech Republic to the North Sea. While the flood warnings in Dresden currently require great attention, the water levels are crucial for the safety of residents. The last update on water levels was at 10:45pm (CEST) yesterday and shows that water levels have risen more than 5cm in the last two hours, already exceeding the Alert Level 1 guideline, as environment.sachsen.de reports.

The Elbe, which flows through important cities such as Dresden, Dessau and Magdeburg, has historical extremes. It recorded its highest water level of 940 cm on August 17, 2002 and its lowest at 21 cm. Critical water levels apply to Dresden: from a water level of 5.5 m, the Terrassenufer is closed, and mobile flood protection gates are used from 6.10 m (Weißeritzstraße) and 7 m (Ostraufer).

Flood warning levels and protective measures

The city of Dresden provides information about the current measures and warns of floods that can occur locally, regionally or even nationally. The different flood warning levels serve as orientation: from alert level 1, which signals a small flood, to alert level 4, which indicates very large floods with significant flooding. Everyone should prepare well in advance because flooding can develop quickly and is often difficult to predict dnn.de reported.

Anyone who would like to find out about current water level data can contact the LHWZ reporting center, which can be reached on 0351 8928-4563. Emails can also be sent to LHWZ@lfulg.sachsen.de. In addition, the information platform Undine recommended, which provides comprehensive data on extreme hydrological events.

The importance of the Elbe for Saxony

The Elbe not only has historical but also important economic functions for the region. As a shipping route, it plays an important role in transportation, while at the same time water quality is constantly monitored. According to the Federal Institute of Hydrology, the Undine platform contains a lot of information that helps to better classify the current situation by comparing it with historical events.

Please remain vigilant and check water levels regularly to stay safe. Let us keep a watchful eye on the changes in nature, because flooding is a natural hazard that should not be underestimated.
