A sonorous baroque night in Freiberg Cathedral: a feast for the senses!
A very special musical event is just around the corner! On Thursday, October 16th, at 7:30 p.m., there will be an organ concert in Freiberg Cathedral that no one should miss. The Bremen cathedral organist Stephan Leuthold will not only perform on the cathedral's two fascinating Silbermann organs, but will also bring baroque sound worlds from Northern and Central Europe as well as France to life. Among other things, visitors can expect works by greats such as Johann Sebastian Bach, Dieterich Buxtehude and Georg Muffat. A very special attraction will be Leuthold's own improvisation in the style of the German Baroque on the chorale “What God does, that is well done”.
As the Free press reports, the concert is dedicated to the Capital of Culture year of Chemnitz 2025. Under the motto “European cathedral organists – sonorous bridges in the spirit of the European Capital of Culture,” this event will be part of a comprehensive celebration of cultural heritage. Last minute tickets are available for 10 euros, reduced for 7 euros.
A musical treasure from Saxony
Saxony has long established itself as a cultural melting pot in Europe. The famous organ builder Gottfried Silbermann, who created it over 300 years ago, plays a crucial role. With over 45 organs and more than 200 stringed keyboard instruments, he left behind an impressive legacy that continues to inspire today.
You can find out more about it and more on the website Gottfried Silbermann Society. In addition, the next Silbermann Days begin on September 5, 2025. The festival is a partner of the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025 and will, among other things, attract visitors with an opening concert by the European Union Baroque Orchestra. This evening will focus on young talent from the EU and offer many exciting musical experiences.
A shared experience of tradition and modernity
The festival combines tradition with modernity and offers space for innovative formats. There will also be a jazz program on the organ, among other things. Artists such as Enrico Onofri and Sebastian Heindl, a winner of the 2021 International Organ Competition, will perform as part of the Silbermann Days. The Mittelsächsische Philharmonie will give an open-air concert in the Freiberg castle courtyard and at the end the final concert will be given by the Hanover Boys' Choir.
The Music in Saxony emphasizes that the Silbermann Days are not only a homage to traditional organ building, but also a platform for young talents who want to be heard in today's exciting music world. The audience award “PURPLE PATH” will finally be awarded for the first time to honor the creative approaches and commitment of the artists. Take the opportunity to immerse yourself in this sounding world!
