Capital of Culture Chemnitz: Discover opportunities for Central Saxony!
What does the region get from the cultural capital? This is the question asked by Stefan Tschök, who is on a reading tour and also stops in Wechselburg. Tschök, the former spokesman for the Chemnitz transport company CVAG, has set himself the goal of finding out the benefits of the title “European Capital of Culture 2025” for Chemnitz and the surrounding regions. He is convinced that the Capital of Culture will radiate far into the region and is planning a comprehensive program with 38 Saxon cities and communities that includes numerous events.
The opening of the Capital of Culture year will take place on January 18, 2025. Chemnitz, the fourth cultural capital in Germany after Berlin, Weimar and Essen, will be artfully presented to the world together with Nova Gorica in Slovenia and Gorizia in Italy. Around 1,000 events are planned for Chemnitz and the surrounding area, and the organizers expect around two million visitors. Not only will Chemnitz culture be illuminated, but the literary days “Leselust goes Europa 2025”, which will take place in March 2025, are also a special highlight. These present works from Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland and reinforce intercultural exchange.
Insight into cultural work
The Chemnitz book and literature scene may be small, but it is committed. In March 2025, the Capital of Culture crime thriller “Tatort? Chemnitz!” published by Paperento Verlag, which consists of 100 contributions from authors from Germany and Austria. Tschök himself will offer insights with his book "What? Chemnitz?! On the risks and side effects of a cultural capital", which will be published in November 2024. He describes his work as a kind of “instruction manual for the Capital of Culture”.
And what about male friendship? Tschök is planning a year-long research tour to 38 places in the cultural region in order to talk to local people. The focus is on cultural talks with committed actors and the audience to shed light on the impact of the title on the region and discuss potential for improvement. His commitment shows how important it is to involve citizens in this process.
Initiate sustainable change
The goal of the Capital of Culture 2025 is to set an example and bring people together. Art and culture can initiate lasting change, and Chemnitz is currently experiencing this exciting change. The topics that are made visible here go beyond the city and Saxony. The participation of citizens is seen as central to positioning West Saxony on the European map as a livable and productive region.
With this project, Chemnitz not only shows its cultural wealth, but also invests in the future of a historically significant industrial region. The exchange of ideas and creativity will further inspire the region and create exciting perspectives for the coming years. Free press reports that Tschök is firmly convinced that this initiative will radiate beyond the borders. The activities of the coming years could serve as a springboard for new opportunities, both for the culture and for the entire region.
It remains exciting to see what developments the Capital of Culture will bring and how it can inspire local people. A good hand and the passion of committed citizens seem to be inevitable.
