On July 14, 2025, the Central Saxony district council decided on the first climate protection concept to promote energy efficiency and sustainable mobility.

Central Saxony is focusing on a green future with a new climate concept!
The district council of Central Saxony approved a comprehensive climate protection concept today. Kerstin Kunze, head of the Department for Economic Development and District Development, describes the process as a real effort. The resolution presents a groundbreaking document that is considered the first of its kind in the district. As saechsische.de reports, both citizens and companies have been actively involved in the decision-making process - a step based on the search for broad support and acceptance.
The 213-page concept aims to increase energy efficiency in district-owned buildings, expand renewable energies and promote climate-friendly mobility. The planned projects include, among other things, the construction of renewable energy systems on district properties. But the charging infrastructure at administrative locations should also be expanded to support both public and private use of electric vehicles.
Sustainable mobility and building efficiency
Another point in the concept are the internal projects that are to be implemented within the next three to ten years. The administrative fleet plays a central role here: it currently consists of 133 vehicles, including two battery-operated electric vehicles. In addition, the signage of cycle paths should be improved in order to further promote cycling as an environmentally friendly alternative.
The plans also envisage converting more than half of the district's buildings, which are older than 50 years, to be climate-neutral. In order to achieve this, climate adaptation measures are considered necessary for renovations and new buildings. The big goal: paperless administration and the replacement of traditional lighting with modern LED technology.
The protection of fertile arable land plays a central role. This particularly affects the Döbelner Lößhügelland and the Rochlitzer Land. Climate-robust soils should also be promoted in the Hainichen and Frankenberg areas. As part of the measures, the district plans to plant heat-resistant plants and a reforestation program to counteract the effects of climate change.
Political reactions and role model function
District Administrator Sven Krüger emphasizes the responsibility that current generations bear for future generations. The district council voted in favor of the concept with 56 votes, while 28 votes were against, especially from the AfD parliamentary group, which takes a critical stance. However, the support from other political groups shows broad political support and the will to implement it.
This initiative in Central Saxony reflects a larger trend that can also be observed at the European level. Umweltbundesamt emphasizes that European climate protection policy serves to mitigate the effects of climate change and reduce environmentally harmful activities. The goal is to become greenhouse gas neutral by 2050, which is being pushed forward with numerous strategies and initiatives, such as the Green Deal.
In Germany, the Climate Protection Plan 2050 is a crucial contribution to these efforts. According to information from the Federal Ministry of Economics, the goal is to reduce greenhouse gases by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 and, in the long term, to obtain as much energy as possible from renewable sources. This plan shows how important the issues of climate protection and sustainability are in German and European politics.
