After 45 years: Brand-Erbisdorf's sports teacher is retiring!

On November 1, 2025, a very special phase of life will be coming up for Jens Matthes: After 45 years of service, the sports teacher at the Bernhard-von-Cotta-Gymnasium in Brand-Erbisdorf will enter his well-deserved retirement. Matthes, who began his career with Nordic combined and later looked after the rope jumpers at SSV Brand-Erbisdorf, has always shown a good knack for new sports. Even though he could have quit on October 1st, he decided to stick it out until the end of the year and enjoy the last few weeks of his playing career. The joy of the next adventures is palpable and he looks forward to retirement with a positive attitude, as the Freie Presse reports.

What has shaped Matthes over the years? He himself explains how important it was to support young talents and prepare them both physically and mentally for the challenges of sport. For him, the transition to retirement will not only mean a step back into his private life, but also the chance to discover new passions, perhaps even new sports.

A new phase of life

Matthes is already looking forward to a time when he can enjoy his newfound freedom. He plans to fill the time he has gained with various activities and perhaps even do more sports himself to stay fit. “I’m looking forward to deepening my interests and trying out new hobbies,” he reveals.

A refreshing drink, such as homemade iced tea, could be a welcome way to cool down on hot summer days. The preparation is simple, consists of just a few steps and can be easily scaled up for larger celebrations. Perfect for spending time with friends and family while chatting about upcoming adventures.

Culinary discoveries: iced tea and more

Preparing iced tea couldn't be simpler: you boil water, let the tea bags steep, add cold water and chill everything. With a little fresh mint and lemon, the whole thing becomes a refreshing accompaniment to any garden party or a relaxing afternoon. This ease of preparation is ideal for Matthias, who now has the opportunity to try his hand in the kitchen.

Of course, there's more to the world of culinary discovery than just iced tea. In some cases, he might indulge in a restaurant like Chez Fifi on the Upper East Side, where French and Basque influences are on the menu. There is a wide range of delicacies, from deviled crab to exquisite main courses such as chicken rôti with foie gras jus

Does retirement also offer an opportunity for new culinary discoveries? Time will tell, but what is certain is that Jens Matthes, with his experience in both sports and the kitchen, is well positioned to happily master the challenges of the new phase of his life.
