Penig remains strong: daycare centers are well positioned despite the decline in births!

There is reason for optimism in the city of Penig, despite the falling birth rates in Germany. Mayor André Wolf is optimistic and emphasizes that the city is well positioned in the area of child day care. Penig runs all of the facilities itself, including three combined daycare centers and two after-school care centers. The facilities are currently at around 76% capacity, which forms a solid basis for the city. A total of 689 childcare places are available, of which 521 are occupied.

An outlook for the coming months gives the mayor hope: he expects occupancy to increase to around 80% by summer 2026. This forecast is based on the current registration numbers and experiences that the city has already gained. Importantly, despite the declining occupancy numbers, there are no plans to merge or close facilities. This shows that the city is taking a long-term approach.

Sustainable planning

The city's after-school care area is already partially working at its capacity limit. However, it is planned to return the capacities expanded through exceptional approval back to normal levels. Mayor Wolf makes it clear that the workforce will be adjusted through forward-looking planning. Part-time contracts, fixed-term contracts and consideration of age-related departures help ensure that staffing levels meet needs.

The mayor considers long-term forecasts for the development of birth rates to be of little use. He assumes there will be a slight decline by 2026. Nevertheless, those responsible in Penig remain flexible and react to current developments in the family structure and registrations.

At a time when demographic change is also affecting other cities, Penig is a good example of how positive development in childcare can be promoted despite challenges. It will be exciting to see how the situation will develop in the coming years and whether the mayor's predictions will come true.

The city is ensuring that the future of childcare in Penig is secured, even if the general challenges in the demographic market remain. A look at the upcoming registrations and the flexibility of the city administration could be the key to a good development.
