Philipp Preißler wins mayoral election in Freiberg!
Philipp Preißler won big in Freiberg: The independent Free Voters candidate won the election for mayor with an impressive 46 percent of the votes in the second round. This represents a clear success for him after he received the most votes with 31.5 percent in the first round of voting four weeks ago, but fell short of an absolute majority. Christian Pudack, supported by an alliance of the Left, the SPD and the Greens, came in second with around 25 percent and had to admit defeat. The other AfD and CDU candidates followed Pudack in the distribution of votes.
But before the matter is official, the formalities still have to be clarified. An official notice was published on Thursday in the electronic official gazette of the city of Freiberg, but there is a possibility that one of the competitors will object to the result. Preißler could still face such a hurdle, even if he is well anchored in the town hall as the office manager of the previous mayor.
Voter turnout in view
Voter turnout in the second round was around 51 percent. This is a relatively solid figure given the most commonly observed challenges in local elections.
