Philipp Preißler triumphs with a large majority in the mayoral election in Freiberg!
On October 26th, a new mayor was elected in Freiberg, and the result is clear: Free press reports that Philipp Preißler won the second round of voting with 45.96 percent of the votes. The candidate of the Free Voters of Central Saxony had already won a clear lead of 31.5 percent in the first round of voting, which took place on September 28th.
But that's not all: Preißler was able to convince a total of 1,654 voters to choose him. Compared to previous elections, there was a noticeable increase in voters who used postal voting. This could be an indication of citizens' increased interest in political participation.
More competition than expected
In the first round of voting, no candidate achieved the necessary absolute majority of 50 percent. In addition to Preißler, who emerged as the favorite, there were also strong competitors: Christian Pudack from “Freiberg für aller”, supported by the SPD, the Left and the Greens, achieved 21.4 percent. Jens Uhlemann from the AfD received 20.5 percent, while Steve Ittershagen from the CDU got 20.1 percent. Dr. Stefan Krinke, independent of party, came in fifth place with 6.5 percent. This shows that the political landscape in Freiberg is quite diverse.
Voter turnout was 57.6 percent, higher than in the last mayoral election in 2022, where only 54.2 percent of voters cast their votes. With around 30,000 eligible voters, this is an encouraging trend that raises hope for more engagement in society. The election organization was carried out professionally in 25 polling stations and 12 postal voting stations. The result of the second round of voting was already clear at around 7:30 p.m. after the voting documents arrived quickly at the town hall. Only Dr. Krinke was there to follow the counting live.
A look into the future
Philipp Preißler's success and increasing voter participation are promising signals for Freiberg's political future. It remains to be seen how Preißler will implement his plans and involve citizens. Especially at a time when many citizens are skeptical about elections, this commitment can create new perspectives.
Another interesting point that influences the economic climate is the performance of companies such as Eaton Corporation, which operates in the power management sector. Stock Analysis shows that Eaton's 2024 revenue was $24.88 billion, up 7.25 percent year-over-year. Such companies could well benefit from a stable political climate, which could further promote the region's economic development.
The mayoral election in Freiberg was not only a political event, but also a social event that encouraged citizens to actively raise their voices and have an influence. This is worth more than ever these days.
