Smart is celebrating a comeback: The new Fortwo #2 is coming back in 2026!
On September 2nd, 2025 there will be exciting news from the world of urban mobility. The manufacturer Smart is planning a comeback of the legendary Fortwo, but in a new interpretation - the Smart #2. Freie Presse reports that the return to the two-seat concept only reflects part of the history of the electric city car. Smart Europe boss Dirk Adelmann highlights how strongly this new two-seater is linked to the Fortwo heritage, while the design comes from Mercedes and technologies are integrated from their joint venture partner Geely.
The Smart #2, which will be available from autumn 2026, will be specially optimized for urban use. The exact length has not yet been released, but a clue suggests that it will start with “2”. The starting price is in the lower 20,000 euro range, making it an attractive option for urban drivers. One of the most important innovations is the doubling of the electric range, which was most recently 130 kilometers. This is what the developers at Geely promise, who will hopefully be able to meet the demands of modern e-mobility.
A niche car is being relaunched
The original Smart Fortwo was introduced 28 years ago and has since become a popular niche car for city dwellers' short journeys. Krone points out that the Smart brand has experienced change and growth in recent years. They now offer not only the classic two-seater, but also larger models such as five-door cars and SUVs. The new Smart #2 is electrically powered and will delight city dwellers as the vehicle length is said to be around 2.70 meters, making it ideal for tight parking spaces.
With the new electric model, Smart is joining a market that is quietly gaining momentum. While the transition to e-mobility has stalled in Germany due to the elimination of the environmental bonus in 2023, there are exciting developments around the world. According to Statista, the number of electric cars amounted to almost 42 million at the end of 2023, with more than half of them registered in China. A good 4.8 million electric cars were counted in the USA, and around 2.3 million were added in Germany.
Challenges and opportunities in e-mobility
The idea that electric cars are more environmentally friendly if they are powered by renewable energy sources is only worthwhile if manufacturers also get production emissions under control. An important topic is the charging infrastructure, which is crucial for the success of electric cars. Statista reports over 3.2 million charging stations worldwide, with the highest numbers in the Netherlands and Germany.
The Smart #2 could not only build on the success of the Fortwo, but also contribute to improving urban mobility and increasing the acceptance of electric vehicles in Europe. The path to a sustainable future seems to be taking its course quietly and secretly, and there is something important for city residents in the coming years.
