Traffic jam horror in Saxony: Drivers lose over 400 hours on vacation!

Summer car journeys through Saxony in 2023 were anything but stress-free. During the six-week summer holidays from July 8th to August 20th, travelers spent significantly more time in traffic jams than in the previous year. According to the Free Press Drivers in Saxony were at a standstill for a total of around 400 hours longer. This number is difficult to ignore, especially since the number of traffic jams remained almost constant compared to the previous year.

The statistics speak for themselves: the ADAC Saxony recorded 212 fewer traffic jams; compared to previous years, they decreased by several lengths. Nevertheless, the burden on citizens should not be underestimated, as despite the decline, travelers struggled with traffic jams for over 12.5 hours more. The problems were particularly evident on the A4, with a total length of almost 1,800 kilometers in 980 different traffic jams. It is all the more surprising that the border controls at the German external border would have little impact on the flow of traffic. Loss times at the border crossing on the A4 actually decreased, which defused the situation somewhat.

What about the highways?

Traffic on the A4 was not only burdened by traffic jams, but was also severely affected by construction sites and heavy goods traffic. These construction sites have been proven to contribute to increased traffic jam duration. Expressed in numbers, this means that the total time spent standing still on this motorway is now an incredible 63,830 minutes – more than 1,063 hours.
A relaxation in traffic was noticeable in the last few weeks of the holiday, which at least offered holidaymakers slightly better driving conditions.

Traffic jam developments compared to previous years

If you compare the latest figures from 2023 with the traffic jam developments of previous years, it quickly becomes clear that there has been a general increase in downtimes in Germany. The ADAC reports that drivers spent 21,000 more hours in traffic jams in 2024 than the year before, an increase of 448,000 hours. The main causes are increased traffic and numerous construction sites, which force travelers to be patient. Also striking are the traffic jam hotspots that can often be found on the most famous highways. The A1, A3 and A8 are particularly at risk, where the chances of a traffic jam are particularly high.

It remains to be hoped that those responsible will recognize the need for improvements and additional planning to make driving in Germany more pleasant. After all, traffic jams are not only a nuisance, but also a real burden for travelers and the economy.
