Danger of storms in Central Saxony: streets flooded and basements full of water!

The storm on June 16, 2025 caused a lot of excitement in Central Saxony. The district of Crossen in Erlau was particularly affected, where streets were flooded and residents faced major challenges. Firefighters and volunteers stood by to sweep the mud from Am Schusterberg Street, while sandbags were filled in the construction yard and placed in front of endangered objects. The Crossener Bach was about to overflow its banks, which made the situation even more tense, reports medienportal-grimma.de.

A critical situation was also emerging in Zetteritz, a district of the municipality of Seelitz. The local pond was in danger of overflowing, which is why the fire department was called around 7:50 p.m. to quickly fill sandbags and check the drainage at the pond. Sandbags were filled at the old fire station in Zetteritz and strategically placed at the old inn. In addition, residents in neighboring towns such as Kiebitz, Obersteina, Rittmitz and Niederlützschera reported full cellars and overflowing streams. A horse paddock near Kattnitz was also affected by the flood, which further aggravated the situation for the affected residents.

Predictions and Warnings

The Saxony State Flood Center has issued a flood warning for the area, which has been reinforced by severe thunderstorms and heavy rain in the past 24 hours, with up to 35mm of rainfall. Further thunderstorms and heavy rain were expected from midday into the evening, with up to 25mm of rain expected within an hour, as landkreis-mittelsachsen.de presented in detail.

However, the water levels at the flood reporting gauges are currently below the alarm limits. However, increases can be observed in the smaller rivers, especially in the Vereinigte Mulde below the Golzern water gauge. The supra-regional flood situation is not considered to be worrying, even if local flooding due to heavy rain cannot be ruled out.

Preventive measures

Based on the current situation, the State Flood Center advises taking precautionary measures such as filling sandbags and securing valuable items. Residents should keep a distance from flowing water and not drive or walk into flooded areas. The applicable safety instructions are important to protect the health of citizens.

For citizens who would like to find out about current water levels and flood reports, water level data from the German Weather Service and the State Flood Center are available. Environment Saxony offers regular updates on this.
