Waldheim is breaking new ground: Green concept for sustainable land management!
A lot is happening in Waldheim when it comes to nature conservation and the maintenance of green spaces. As Sächsische.de reports, the city is planning a comprehensive green space concept for around 40 hectares. The aim is to establish ecologically more sensible and climate-adapted care practices. The Waldheim building yard is not only the central point of contact for the maintenance of urban green spaces, but also takes care of the care in the individual districts, the playgrounds and sports fields and the cemeteries. An engineering firm from Leipzig began developing the concept last year.
Particular attention is paid to the assessment and selection of resilient plants and trees. This also examines which shrubs and perennials require less irrigation. A possible change could be the conversion of traditional lawns into flowering meadows, which not only look chic but also promote biodiversity.
New challenges in green space maintenance
But it's not just in Waldheim that there are efforts to modernize green space maintenance. In this context, the seminars offered by the Bildungsstätte Gartenbau e.V., which deal, among other things, with challenges such as climate change and the death of insects, are helpful. The seminar, which lasts from October 9, 2023 to October 11, 2024, is aimed at beginners and advanced users and offers in-depth insights into the maintenance of public green spaces. This lays the foundation for increasing acceptance among city administrations and those committed to nature conservation. These approaches are also part of a larger trend that is taken up in the VDI's recommendations for action, published in January 2023. The recommendations aim to create more urban greenery to improve biodiversity and increase thermal comfort in inner cities. The use of heat- and drought-resistant native wild plants is of particular importance here. The fact that not only Waldheim can benefit from these approaches can also be seen in the recommendations for other municipalities that should further develop public parks and green roofs. This further information can be found in the article by Neuelandschaft.
Green spaces for our future
Overall, the development in Waldheim shows how important it is for municipalities to establish well-thought-out concepts for green space maintenance. Not only does the cityscape benefit from beautifully designed green spaces, the quality of life of the citizens also increases. If we can withstand drought and heat better, it is also due to our ability to use our green spaces wisely. The role our cities play in this is clear: they must remain green and adapt to the climatic challenges. Waldheim could, in the best case scenario, serve as a role model.
