Winter service in Central Saxony: 8,000 tons of salt for safe roads!

Winter is approaching and the road maintenance departments in the Central Saxony district have long since completed all preparations for the season. At the Brand-Erbisdorf, Mühlau, Freiberg, Hainichen, Rochlitz and Döbeln locations, employees are available to keep the roads safe in snow and bad weather conditions. Loud Sächsische.de There are a total of 28 of our own vehicles, supplemented by almost 40 vehicles from regional companies, including eight tractors that were contracted to support winter service.

A not entirely insignificant point: the technology, whether it was a spreader or a snow shovel, was maintained over the summer in the official workshop in Hainichen. This way you can be sure that everything is running smoothly when the first snowflakes fall. The road maintenance authorities have also taken precautions and are storing almost 6,800 tonnes of road salt, while a further 8,000 tonnes are available following a tendering process. Last winter season, around 8,500 tons of road salt were needed - a clear sign of how important good preparation is to get through the winter safely.

Efficiency and safety

District Administrator Sven Krüger has already asked citizens to be careful when driving, especially when the roads become slippery again. To ensure road safety, employees begin their shifts at 3 a.m. and continue until around 9 or 10 p.m. In extreme weather conditions, the road maintenance departments are even on duty all night long. And the road network that needs to be managed is also tough: with around 1,600 kilometers of district, state and federal roads, it represents an enormous challenge to always keep the transit conditions optimal, informed Erzgebirge.tv.

Preventive measures are also particularly important: snow fences are set up at strategic focal points to minimize the accumulation of snow. Winter maintenance must not only be reactive but also proactive to keep roads safe.

A look outside the box

How winter service is organized in Central Saxony is also linked to current research developments. In Austria, for example, a research project is being worked on under the title “Effective Model of Spreading, Clearing and Residual Salt” that is intended to improve the efficiency of winter service and make it more environmentally friendly. It examines how different gritting agents can be used optimally to take the needs of the road and traffic into account. This project is supported by a consortium including all nine federal states, ASFINAG and the Federal Ministry, reports bmimi.gv.at.

As soon as the temperatures drop and the snow comes, the road maintenance departments are ready to tackle even the most difficult conditions. To ensure that everyone has a safe winter, everyone involved is required to act carefully and prudently. Whether driving or winter service - only with a good hand and responsible management will you be able to get through the cold season well.
