21-year-old crashes while driving drunk in Wiedemar-Lissa - Audi burns!
On the night of Saturday, July 20, 2025, a short but dramatic vehicle life came to an end in Wiedemar-Lissa. A 21-year-old driver was driving his Audi at excessive speed when he lost control of the vehicle in a right-hand bend around 3:15 a.m. The result was a serious accident that caused his car to stall between two properties and burst into flames. Pretty dangerous considering the vehicle was completely destroyed and the police had to get there as quickly as possible.
The situation immediately caught the attention of the rescue workers, who arrived at the scene of the accident immediately, but initially only found the passenger, who was fortunately uninjured. He was treated in hospital as a precaution. The driver, however, disappeared after the accident. However, he was later found near the scene and also taken to the hospital. The medical examinations became necessary after an alcohol test showed he had a blood alcohol level of over 1.1 per mille. Not only that, he also didn't have a driver's license.
Drunk driving – a trending danger
As the insurers' accident research (UDV) shows, such incidents involving young drunk drivers are not isolated cases. In 2023, 18- to 24-year-olds caused a total of 1,287 alcohol-related traffic accidents, in which 18 people died and 372 were seriously injured. These figures are alarming and shed light on the dangerous behavior of many young drivers. For many of these young people, it is sometimes difficult to say the right no to drinking and driving, which puts them in risky situations.
What many people don't know is that even a value below 0.5 per mille can have consequences. These legal backgrounds are often unknown among young drivers, especially when the ban on alcohol until the age of 20 - which acts as a protective measure - is abolished as soon as they turn 21. This reduces the pressure to stay sober, which leads to more drunk driving.
Prevention required
The UDV therefore calls for mandatory training for novice drivers in order to be able to better deal with drinking-driving conflicts in an emergency and to be better informed. Consideration is also being given to maintaining the alcohol ban until the age of 24 in order to increase road safety. In addition to better education, an efficient public transport network could also help reduce the risk of alcohol-related accidents.
The incidents surrounding the accident in Wiedemar-Lissa remind us once again to think about our responsibility in road traffic. Speeding and alcohol should under no circumstances be a dangerous combination - not only for the driver himself, but also for all road users.
Stay careful and remember: getting to your destination safely is always the best way!
