Trees threatened to fall: Bornitz fire department in large-scale operation!
In Bornitz near Oschatz, the fire department was alerted today after strong winds toppled several poplar trees. At 2:32 p.m. the Bornitz Volunteer Fire Department said it was “ready for action” when the first reports of fallen trees came in. These not only blocked the road, but also fell into power lines and increased the risk of fire due to arcing, as lvz.de reports.
The fire chief René Tschierske described that when the emergency services arrived there were audible and visible sparks, which, thanks to the previous rain, did not lead to a catastrophe. The poplars were well moistened and were able to prevent further fires. However, emergency services suspect that the waterlogged ground made the trees more vulnerable to the strong wind, which ultimately led to them falling.
Dedicated effort by the fire department
The Bornitz fire department was supported by the Oschatz fire department; a total of nine Bornitz comrades and three helpers from Oschatz were on duty. The fire brigade arrived with a turntable ladder and also required the assistance of energy supplier Envia Mitnetz to carry out power cuts during the work.
The measures on site included dismantling the fallen trees and clearing the road, which took several hours. Thanks to quick action and efficient collaboration, the parked vehicle, which was in the danger zone, was removed without any damage.
Police officers secured the area at the pond to ensure the safety of everyone involved. The operation was finally over at 7:30 p.m. and the road was reopened to traffic.
Similar incidents in the region
A look beyond the borders shows that the weather conditions also caused problems elsewhere. Similar incidents occurred in Norddeich on August 2, 2025, when strong gusts of wind caused three poplar trees to fall over. The North Volunteer Fire Department was active in this operation and had to fell the trees within just half an hour in order to free the traffic areas, as feuerwehr-norden.de reports.
The events in Bornitz and Norddeich show once again how important good cooperation and quick reactions by the fire brigade are in order to avert dangers and ensure the safety of citizens.
