Farmers in Saxony are desperate: Falling prices and lack of rain!

Agriculture in Saxony is facing difficult times. Current developments show how much farmers are suffering from financial pressure, which is exacerbated by falling grain prices and persistent drought. Loud stern.de Cash crop farming has now become a loss-making business. This is particularly noticeable: grain prices have been falling consistently since spring and are below the previous year's level in many places.

But it's not just the prices that are causing concern. High costs for inputs such as seeds, fertilizers and pesticides make it difficult for farmers to market their products to cover their costs. “A trend reversal in falling prices is not in sight,” points out Torsten Krawczyk, President of the Saxon State Farmers’ Association. Agriculture Minister Georg-Ludwig von Breitenbuch (CDU) states that the economic situation of agricultural companies has deteriorated significantly in the 2023/24 financial year.

Difficult weather conditions

The weather, a crucial factor for agricultural success, is also not favorable to farmers. Despite the good conditions for sowing, the lack of water in the soil has dramatically worsened the situation. A look at the soil shows that the water reserves in the subsoil are decreasing significantly - which could have dramatic consequences in the hot season. The state farmers' association also warns of an insufficient supply of food if yields are severely lacking.

Despite the challenges, there are also bright spots: revenue from the sale of milk, grain, oilseeds and pigs is the second best result in the last 20 years. However, these positive aspects are overshadowed by the overall economic difficulties in the industry. Minister von Breitenbuch emphasizes that resilient and sustainable agriculture is necessary that can actually cover costs.

Funding and support

In order to meet these challenges, the compensation allowance for disadvantaged areas in Saxony will be continued at 12.5 million euros annually. This could be an important building block in giving Saxon farmers at least a certain degree of planning security. Farmers in Saxony currently manage around 700,000 hectares of arable land, of which 384,400 hectares are used for growing grain and 109,000 hectares for winter rapeseed.

An overview of the framework conditions for agricultural production as well as information on rental prices and subsidies can be found in a new brochure from the State Ministry for the Environment and Agriculture. This publication also contains developments in organic farming and highlights further training in green professions. Those interested can download the brochure as a PDF as it is only available electronically ( publications.sachsen.de ).

The current situation in Saxon agriculture requires quick action and innovative thinking. It remains to be hoped that those responsible will quickly find suitable solutions to support the farmers during this difficult time.
