Flood alarm in Saxony: Current water levels on the Elbe near Torgau

The Elbe, one of Europe's largest rivers, has once again caused a stir. At around 1,094 kilometers, it stretches majestically from the Czech Republic to the North Sea, where it flows into the Brunsbüttel. Important cities along its route include Dresden, Dessau and Torgau. Here, in Torgau, the water level is an explosive issue today. Current measurements show that the Elbe exudes a tranquil calm with a water level of 43 cm, but it remains to be seen whether this value will remain stable. The water level was last documented at 8:15 p.m., with a flow of 96.7 m³/s, as reported by the Saxony environmental website, which regularly updates the water levels.

But what do these values mean in relation to possible flood warnings? In Saxony there are clear alert levels that are intended to offer security to the population. At a water level of 740 cm, alert level 3 is reached, while alert level 4 is declared from 780 cm. There is currently no focus on flood warnings for Saxony, but the responsible authorities are always keeping a close eye on the water levels. The flood center and the various reporting services, including social media, as well as classic channels such as radio and television, ensure that the population is informed promptly.

Flood warning system and forecast

The flood warning system in Germany is well organized. The forecast on the Inner Elbe is controlled by the flood forecast center at the State Office for Flood Protection and Water Management in Saxony-Anhalt. Close cooperation with the State Flood Center of the Free State of Saxony ensures that warnings can be given precisely and quickly. Operators of these systems use a water level forecast model called WAVOS Elbe, which has been continuously adapted since 2017 in order to be able to react to possible flood situations.

How do you recognize the alert levels in Torgau? The system is divided into four levels, ranging from minor flooding to acute dangerous situations. While alert level 1 signals the first outbreaks of violence, the remaining levels are intended for more serious situations: flooding of properties and streets can be observed from alert level 3, while alert level 4 leads to a situation requiring evacuation. It is therefore important to be careful and take the warnings seriously.

Water levels and average values

Interestingly, the Elbe in Torgau has experienced strong fluctuations in water levels over the years. The lowest low water level was recorded at 20 cm, while the highest flood level was recorded at 949 cm on August 18, 2002. The average water level over the past ten years has been 164 cm, while the average flood level is only 503 cm. The environmental authority points out that such values can serve as a guide, as they are crucial for assessing the flood situation.
