Young people roll over in car madness – father is clueless!

A worrying incident was reported in northern Saxony today, which once again brings the challenges faced by young drivers into focus. According to information from Süddeutsche.de Three teenagers between the ages of 14 and 16 used their father's vehicle without permission and caused a serious accident. The journey ended on federal highway 107 near Zschepplin, where the car overturned.

Some of the young people were taken to hospital with injuries, and some even had to be hospitalized there. The vehicle was used for this dangerous trip without the father's knowledge. In addition to physical integrity, the police now have to determine who was actually behind the wheel. The charges against the young people are serious and include, among other things, negligent bodily harm, unauthorized removal from the scene of an accident, driving without a license and unauthorized use of the vehicle. The damage caused is estimated at around 20,000 euros.

The danger for young drivers

Young drivers have a noticeably high risk of accidents on the road. According to an analysis by the ADAC accident research 18 to 24 year olds in particular are significantly more likely to be involved in accidents, often caused by alcohol, youthful arrogance and a lack of experience. This age group has a risk that is twice as high as the average population.

The research showed that 29% of accidents involving young drivers are solo accidents, which is a significant number compared to older drivers. In addition, 76% of accidents occur outside of town, i.e. on country and federal highways. The main cause of these accidents is often improper speed, especially in the fatal accidents that occur mainly on weekends between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

A long-term decline

Despite these worrying figures, an analysis shows that the overall risk of accidents among young drivers has been reduced in recent years. In 1991 there were 134,764 young adults injured in accidents, while in 2020 the numbers fell significantly to just 326 Traffic Watch reported. Influencing factors such as the “Accompanied Driving from 17” program and a general awareness of road safety have certainly contributed to the positive development.

Nevertheless, the danger remains present. Young drivers tend to overestimate their ability and not adapt their speed to the conditions. This is compounded by the old average age of the vehicles they drive - many over 11 years old - as they often offer fewer safety features.

Given these developments, it is important that both parents and young people are aware of the responsibilities that come with driving. The accident in northern Saxony should be a flaming signal for everyone who gets behind the wheel.
