Bicycle racing battle in Dölzig: 250 riders rock the traditional route!

On Saturday, August 23, 2025, the charming Dölzig in the municipality of Schkeuditz held its traditional “Prize of Dölzig” cycling race. This year the event celebrated its 30th anniversary and attracted 250 cyclists from all over Germany. The participants had the opportunity to prove themselves on a demanding high-speed circuit that was 1.29 kilometers long and wound its way through the village, which has around 2,000 inhabitants. The route has remained unchanged since 1971 and starts and ends in front of the well-known Goldener Hirsch restaurant, which caused a lot of activity.

The biker event started early in the day: the starting signal was given at 11 a.m. for the first four runs, which appealed to both children and young people. Around 400 spectators watched the events in a lively atmosphere, while many people from Dölzig watched the exciting competitions from their gardens. The post-pandemic return to the event in 2024, which signaled a restart with 150 participants and 500 spectators, was significantly exceeded with an additional 100 registrations this year. What a comeback!

The course of the race and the routes

The cycling race comprised a total of nine runs, with the athletes' performances being impressive. The most exciting duel was fought by the men in the elite class, who took on the longest distance of 60 kilometers (45 laps). The driving fun for the smaller racing classes was no less remarkable: the children in the U11 and U13 classes drove the shortest route of 16 kilometers (12 laps). Here is a brief overview of the different category times and distances:

In order to complete the circuit, good fitness was required. Participants were able to choose between short and long distances, so there was something for everyone. After the last round and the subsequent awards ceremony, a street disco took place, to everyone's great delight, to properly celebrate the successful day.

Cycling is trendy

Cycling races like the Dölzig Prize clearly show that cycling is booming in Germany. There are currently around 84 million bicycles in this country, which corresponds to the population. Almost half of Germans sit in the saddle regularly. Topics such as environmental compatibility and health play their part in ensuring that the tailwind for bicycle lovers does not stop. The recent sales figures of four million bicycles in 2023 speak for themselves.

But not everything is just bliss: the infrastructure continues to be a challenge. Bad cycle paths and busy streets are the order of the day in many places. Nevertheless, there is an upward trend and more and more cities are making efforts to become bicycle-friendly.

The success of the cycle race in Dölzig is a great example of how vibrant cycling culture is in Germany and that it is worth pedaling together.
