Shock on the B87: Two injured after a head-on collision!

A serious traffic accident caused a stir on Tuesday, June 18, 2025, on the B87 near Jesewitz. At 11:50 a.m., a VW Phaeton crossed into oncoming traffic in a left-hand bend and collided head-on with a Volvo XC40. The 78-year-old driver of the VW and the 62-year-old driver of the Volvo suffered injuries and were immediately taken to hospital. The vehicles were no longer drivable and had to be towed away. The total damage is estimated at around 50,000 euros. The traffic accident service has started an investigation, including into negligent bodily harm.

The incident happened in a section of the B87 that has already attracted negative attention from accidents of the same type in the past. A few hours later, around lunchtime, another accident occurred in the region: a 57-year-old driver of a VW Passat noticed too late that a 36-year-old Ford Focus driver wanted to turn left onto the Outer Ring street. As a result, there was a rear-end collision in which both women suffered serious injuries and had to be taken to hospital. Here too, the estimated material damage amounts to around 15,000 euros. The accident site was completely closed for over two hours and the police are also investigating negligent bodily harm in this case. According to Blick, the circumstances on the B87 were very tense during this period.

Safe streets for everyone?

The number of traffic accidents in Germany shows how pressing the issue is: around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were recorded in 2023, and while the damage to property is usually high, the number of accidents with personal injuries remains at a constant level. Compared to the 19,193 traffic deaths in 1970, the number has fallen to 2,839 in 2023. But this downward trend has been slowing since the early 2010s and car use has been steadily increasing, which doesn't make the situation any easier.

The most common causes of accidents are insufficient distance, improper speed and driving under the influence of alcohol. In 2023 alone, there were almost 15,700 alcohol-related accidents with 193 deaths and 18,686 injuries. In addition, the dangers posed by e-bikes and e-scooters have increased significantly in recent years, with 23,744 people injured or killed on e-bikes in 2023 alone. This development shows how diverse the challenges in road traffic are and that it is necessary to create more awareness of safety when cycling. The ongoing investigations and statistics remind us to be careful – both among drivers and cyclists. provide further information Statista.
