Seelhausener See: Is swimming and surfing possible this summer?

Hope for water sports enthusiasts and swimmers at Seelhausen Lake: Julia Wedemann, the lake development pilot in the North Saxony district office, reports that approval for swimming and surfing in summer is definitely possible. The municipality of Löbnitz is being supported in pushing forward the lengthy approval process. The aim is particularly to pass a general decree that would allow swimming and the use of small, non-motorized watercraft, such as stand-up paddling and windsurfing. But it remains to be seen whether these plans can be put into practice, because Seelhausener See is within the scope of the LMBV's “Goitzsche final operating plan”, whose approval is required.

Part of the northern shore of the lake is already being prepared for potential release. In addition, the local kite club, which has existed since 2019 and has around 90 members, has set up an information board and filled a section with gravel. These measures are part of efforts to promote the use of the lake for sports and tourism purposes. Club chairman Torsten Gläßer emphasizes that they distance themselves from illegal use and emphasize cooperation with the community. Club members are actively involved in maintaining the beaches and green spaces as well as in garbage collection campaigns. Unimpressed by the warning signs that prohibit entry to the mining site, many would like to see legal use of the lake for kitesurfing and other water activities in the future.

Be careful when using the waters

The anticipation of swimming and surfing at Seelhausener See is also overshadowed by certain concerns. Swimming in open water is not only healthy, but also involves risks. Currents and shallows can be dangerous and even lead to accidents. In addition, possible water contamination is pointed out. Wastewater discharges or runoff from agriculture can endanger water quality. The Federal Environment Agency provides comprehensive information on this and points out the need to regularly monitor bathing waters in order to protect the health of swimmers.

Another relevant point comes into play in the debate about the use of the lake: compliance with existing regulations and laws is essential. The kite club is forced to take measures to stop long-term camping in the parking lot because it is repeatedly ignored. In order to avoid problems, it was decided to close the parking lot to non-members with cars over 1.9 meters high. The aim is to maintain space for club members while still allowing a certain level of accessibility for other users.
The preparations for responsible and safe use of Lake Seelhausen are taking shape, and with a bit of luck, summer at the lake will actually be a highlight for water sports enthusiasts and swimmers.
