Taucha high school graduate inspires with environmental research and special prize!

In a great competition for young researchers, 18-year-old Tobias Pötzsch was able to score points in the nationwide “Jugend forscht” competition. The high school graduate from the Zwilling-Scholl-Gymnasium in Taucha was awarded a special prize in Hamburg for his outstanding achievements in the field of environmental technology. He also received prize money of 1,000 euros for his innovative project, which deals with pollutants in groundwater. He relies on data-supported simulation to analyze the transport of substances in groundwater. Pötzsch found inspiration during an internship at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, where the first ideas for his project grew. Instead of writing a conventional paper, the talented student decided on a special learning achievement that can even replace his Abitur exam. Although his original work was 60 pages, he had to cut it down to 15 pages for the competition.

Big appearance in Hamburg

The competition, which took place at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg at the end of May, gave Pötzsch the opportunity to present his work to a jury and the public. It became clear that Tobias not only has a head, but also a heart for the issue of environmental protection. In addition to his outstanding research achievements, the young scientist also passed his Abitur exams with top marks in almost all subjects.

In order to realize his plans, Pötzsch would like to save the prize money for his upcoming studies in Heidelberg (specializing in physics). The summer should also be used to travel a little and gain new experiences - a wild plan for a full head! The young man is currently getting his driving license so that he can be mobile in the new phase of his life.

“Youth researches” on the European stage

But Tobias wasn't the only one who was successful: the German Research Foundation (DFG) also awarded the European Prize to four other winners from the federal “Jugend forscht” competition. This award aims to promote international collaboration and networking in the field of science. On June 1st, as part of the finale in Hamburg, DFG Secretary General Dr. Heide Ahrens received the prizes, with prominent support from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär. Each winner also received 1,000 euros in prize money to prepare for the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS) in September in Riga, Latvia. Wissenschaftsregion-bonn.de reports that ...

The outstanding achievements shown by the participants in “Jugend forscht” are not only important for the award winners. These events provide valuable experiences for everyone involved, including those who don't win the top prizes. Who knows, maybe the next great scientific talent will emerge here!

The large number of “Jugend forscht” prizes at different levels, from regional to national competitions, motivates many young people to contribute their ideas. At the regional level, for example, the winner in seven subject areas receives 75 euros, while the national winners can win up to 3,000 euros.
