Taucha's high school graduate inspires environmental research and special prize!
In a great competition for young researchers, 18-year-old Tobias Pötzsch scored score in the nationwide “Jugend forscht” competition. The high school graduate from the Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium in Taucha was awarded a special prize in Hamburg for its outstanding services in the field of environmental technology. He also received prize money of 1000 euros for his innovative project, which deals with pollutants in the groundwater. He relies on data -based simulation to analyze the fabric transport in the groundwater. lvz.de reports that…
Inspiration found Pötzsch during an internship at the Helmholtz Center for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig, where the first ideas grew to his project. Instead of writing a conventional specialist work, the talented student opted for a special learning performance that can even replace his Abitur examination. Although his original work included 60 pages, he had to shorten the competition on 15 pages.
big appearance in Hamburg
The competition, which took place at the Helmut Schmidt University in Hamburg at the end of May, brought Pötzsch the opportunity to present his work to a jury and the public. It was shown that Tobias not only has head but also heart for environmental protection. In addition to his outstanding research performance, the young scientist also mastered his high school exams with top grade in almost all subjects.
To realize his plans, Pötzsch wants to save the prize money for his upcoming study in Heidelberg (field of physics). Summer should also be used to travel a little and gain new experiences - a wild plan for a full head! Currently the young man also gets his driver's license to be on the move in the new phase of life.
"youth research" on European stage
But not Tobias alone was successful: The German Research Foundation (DFG) also awarded four other winners from the federal competition “Jugend Forscht” with the European Prize. This award aims to promote international cooperation and networking in science. On June 1st, as part of the final in Hamburg, DFG general secretary Dr. Heide Ahrens the prices, with prominent support from Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär. Each winner also received prize money of 1000 euros to prepare for the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (Eucys) in September in Riga, Latvia. The multitude of prices at "Jugend forscht" on different levels, from regional to nationwide competitions, motivates many young people to contribute their ideas. At the regional level, for example, the winner receives 75 euros in seven specialist areas, while the federal winners can win up to 3000 euros.
