THW Niedersachsen: 300 helpers in the fight against devastating forest fires!
In the middle of a devastating forest fire season, the technical relief organization (THW) from Lower Saxony reacted quickly and sent strength to combat the fires in the Gohrischheide, North Saxony. Around 300 volunteers from all over Germany are on site to master the dangerous situation. According to regionalheute.de already affects an area of over 2,000 hectare forest. The continued drought and the extreme temperatures above 30 degrees have favored the fires, which has become critical of the situation.
In use, helpers from seven local associations are in use, with a specialist train from Lehrte took over the management to replace the other forces. Teams from Oldenburg and Wilhelmshaven explore the situation while the helpers from Schöningen, Helmstedt and Soltau set up a care center. The cooperation with the fire brigade, the federal police and the Bundeswehr is efficient before the emergency services with material transport, pumping work and the illumination of areas of application grip vigorously.
an increased role of the THW
The commitment of the THW is part of a growing challenge caused by climate change. A current report by the DNR emphasizes that climate -related operations, especially for forest fires, have increased in recent years. The number of missions that require the 88,000 volunteers and professional forces of the THW has increased unexpectedly. For example, in 2024 alone there were three larger operations due to storms that the THW presented with new challenges.
A concise example of the past is the heavy rain disaster 2021, which was the greatest challenge in the history of the THW around the Ahr. Over 17,000 emergency services were ready and acted efficiently to help people in need. In such extreme situations, the THW forces always have a good hand when it comes to mobilizing the necessary resources and coordinating cooperation with other organizations.
forest fire protection in change
In view of the increasing number and intensity of forest fires, forest fire protection in Germany is becoming increasingly important. On forest.fnr.de was published the first technical recommendation for forest fire management. With the support of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture as well as for the environment, nature conservation and nuclear security, the handling of forest fires is re -evaluated. The experts emphasize that the risk of forest and surface fires is becoming increasingly acute due to climate change and the reaction to this requires a rethink. The importance of air support in forest fire fighting is also emphasized. The aim of the operational guideline pursues the goal of better adapting air strikes to the danger levels and not only to the brand size. With this sensibly structured approach, important resources can be used more efficiently. The-> forest fire climate resilience In these challenging times, it can be seen once again that a strong sense of community and well -organized help are indispensable both on site and in the coordination between the various aid organizations in order to effectively counter the threats from forest fires.
