Saxony-Anhalt wants to stop animal welfare labels – minister speaks plainly!
In a hi-tech world full of animal welfare challenges, things are currently hanging in the balance. Saxony-Anhalt plans to stop the already established animal welfare label. State Minister Schulze has announced a move to this end in the Federal Council. The aim is to work with other federal states to create a Europe-wide uniform concept for the labeling of animal products. In his opinion, the existing label does not sufficiently address the needs of consumer protection and animal welfare. Schulze is calling for labeling that comprehensively reflects how the animal is kept until slaughter, regardless of whether it is domestic animals or imported ones, reported Deutschlandfunk.
Since July 2021, the Animal Welfare Initiative has been issuing a seal for meat products that are produced under improved husbandry conditions. This is intended to give millions of animals, including pigs, chickens and turkeys, a better life than legally required. In order to achieve these goals, animal owners implement specific criteria that go beyond the legal minimum standards and are paid accordingly. Independent inspectors ensure that the criteria are adhered to through regular checks. Consumers can therefore actively contribute to improving animal welfare by purchasing appropriate products, as can be found on the Initiative Tierwohl.
The actors' reactions
Schulze's announcement found both supporters and critics. The consumer protection organization Foodwatch spoke out and warned that stopping the plans could cause enormous harm to the meat industry. The importance of a binding state animal welfare label is highlighted, which is seen as a central step in improving the conditions in which farm animals are kept. Klaus Müller, board member of vzbv, emphasizes the importance of a uniform seal for consumer orientation. Especially since consumers are willing to spend more money on the welfare of farm animals. This perspective is also shared by many in the catering industry who sustainably support the animal welfare initiative and actively integrate the seal into their products.
However, the political discussion is not just about the welfare of animals. Minister Rainer from the CSU has spoken out against tightening the rules, which is further fueling the debate about the animal welfare label. According to the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations, the need for a comprehensive livestock farming strategy is undisputed. Such a strategy would not only benefit the animals, but could also lead to sustainable improvement of the entire industry.
The importance of the issue of animal welfare is widely recognized, but the legislative approach remains controversial. A shared commitment to clear and consistent standards could result in both animals and consumers benefiting. Those who stay on the ball have the best hands on this topic.
