New public transport concept: Saxon Switzerland on the way to the mobility transition!

On June 23, 2025, a decisive session took place in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Mountains in the district council, which dealt with a new concept for local public transport (public transport). This concept, created by the engineering firm Cramer Consult on behalf of the district administration, aims to design mobility in accordance with current trends and needs. Landratsamt Pirna reports of a comprehensive analysis of the existing bus network that takes into account various categories such as public transport in the greater Dresden area as well as the regional, urban and tourist traffic.

The district administration sees itself in the face of increasing demand - due to the German ticket and pendant education on the Czech Republic - the responsibility to gradually optimize public transport. A central field of action is the improvement of the main axes to Dresden and city traffic in Pirna and Freital. In order to relieve the traffic situation, especially in the tourist area, the expansion of tourism and excursion traffic is also sought. It is important to find innovative approaches to solve development problems in rural areas.

optimization and future visions

The strategy of the district administration is strongly based on population development and the requirements of an aging society. This emphasizes the need for a demand -oriented public transport, which is also open to new technologies. Particular attention is paid to the financing and the technical innovations, in particular the electrification of bus traffic. This could not only increase the quality of the public transport offer, which is already considered to be good to very well, but also contribute to achieving the climate goals.

An exciting novelty in public transport is the introduction of bicycle bus lines that are available in the district from March to November. These lines not only offer the opportunity to transport up to 16 bicycles or e-bikes at the same time, but also ensure that overnight guests can remain mobile with a guest card. [Sächsische Switzerland] (https://www.saechsische-schweiz.de/gut-zu-wissen/gaeste card/oepnv) describes that the bicycle bus lines on weekends and public holidays run between touristically attractive destinations. Also new is the offer between Pirna and Bad Gottleuba during the week, which is made possible by its own bus line.

The turnover of traffic as a challenge

But the challenges in the mobility sector are diverse. As shown by the Federal Center for Political Education, the climate and resource crisis of an urgent traffic is required. The cities are faced with an overload of the infrastructures, which not only has a negative impact on the environment, but also affects the quality of life. Power usage, digitization and alternative drive technologies are essential building blocks for future mobility architecture.

The need to promote environmentally friendly modes of transport and reduce motorized private transport is therefore the focus of current discussions. The goal is clear: the turnover of the traffic should help keep the urban space for all road users worth living and at the same time reduce climate -damaging emissions.

In this context, the implementation of the new public transport concept is a crucial step in order to use the opportunities for sustainable mobility and to master the existing challenges. While the infrastructure is expanded and optimized, creative incentives must also be set to attract the population for environmentally friendly modes of transport. Commitment is required here, because the future of mobility is in the hands of each individual.
