Neustadt in Saxony: Memories of the legendary Café Wochenpost

History plays a big role in the small, charming town of Neustadt in Saxony. In particular, the former Café Wochenpost, opened on October 7, 1959, attracted many literature lovers and dance enthusiasts to its premises. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the GDR, the café was launched with a special concept that brought writers and citizens together. Herta Steinert and Rudolf Maschke came up with the idea, inspired by an article about a reading room in Vienna, and received active support from the Wochenpost editorial team and the mayor at the time. Sächsische reports that ...

The café was known for its eclectic menu. Here there was the popular ragout fin with toast for 3.55 GDR marks or the Strammen Max and spicy beef salad, both of which were sold for 2.20 GDR marks each. It was open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to midnight, and even until 1 a.m. on weekends. On the first floor of the two-story building there was a reading café with around 300 books to choose from. Well-known writers such as Franz Fühmann, Willi Bredel and Erwin Strittmatter contributed to the special atmosphere with readings.

Memories and current developments

However, the change also brought dark times for the café, because when the economy collapsed, it was run privately in 1994 and eventually closed. An investor purchased the building, but the monument protection was lifted and the interior was lost. Nevertheless, the city museum has preserved valuable memorabilia, including dishes, armchairs and menus, which keep the history of the café alive. On September 18th there will be a lecture about the eventful history of the café in Langburkersdorf Castle. A reservation is recommended for this.

In addition to the history of the café, the interactive adventure trail in Neustadt also attracts visitors. Neustadt-Sachsen notes that ... the path is equipped with historical plaques that are set up in significant places in the city, including the former Café Wochenpost. Each board is equipped with a QR code that makes the history of the respective location audible. The adventure trail is particularly aimed at families who want to explore the city in a playful way. As an additional offer, there is the new booklet with puzzles and anecdotes, which is available for EUR 2.50 in the tourism service center and in the city library.
