A tragic event was reported on Sunday in the picturesque Copitz natural lake near Pirna. A 26-year-old man has been missing since the early hours after calling for help in the water. Witnesses reported that he drew attention to his plight through facial expressions and gestures, but before bathers and rescue workers could intervene, he had already sunk. Tom Eckert, the operations manager of the Pirna fire department, confirmed the dramatic situation on the spot. Bathers immediately made emergency calls when they saw him in trouble.
After the alarm was raised, one brave woman dived for the missing man while another swam to search for him in the lake. When the fire brigade arrived, they immediately began rescue operations. A human chain was formed to search the shore and shallower waters. However, the initial glimmers of hope of finding the young man faded when he no longer appeared both on sight and after intensive searches.
Rescue operations and recovery
Rescue workers, water rescue services and the DLRG did everything they could to locate the missing person. A sonar device was used to determine the exact positions in the water. Ultimately, the 26-year-old was rescued lifeless at a depth of 2.5 meters. The sad news shocked those present and left a marked sadness in the community.
In recent years, the number of swimming accidents in bodies of water and lakes has not decreased. Such incidents remind us of the importance of safety precautions around water sources. Young people in particular should be made aware of how they should behave in the water in order to avoid accidents.
