Strong thunderstorm threatens: Vogtlandkreis is under warning!
Severe storms hit the Vogtland on Sunday. The German Weather Service (DWD) issued a weather warning for the Vogtland district shortly after 11 p.m. This applies until the early hours of September 22, 2025. Thunderstorms with heavy rain amounts of between 20 and 35 liters per square meter were expected within just six hours, supplemented by gusts of wind that can reach speeds of up to 60 km/h. Numerous communities are affected, including Auerbach, Plauen, and Bad Elster, to name just a few. The DWD's warning level 2 (orange) indicates the possibility of severe weather and potential damage, and the public has been urged to take particular care outdoors and near bodies of water and to secure loose objects.
Intense rainfall and squalls were expected overnight. At the time of the warning, the DWD registered a temperature of 12 degrees and a humidity of 81 percent, which further exacerbated the weather situation. According to the hourly weather forecast, rain will continue until the early hours of the morning and temperatures will drop to as low as 9 degrees.
Fire departments in a busy situation
The effects of the storms were already clearly noticeable on Sunday. According to Spitzenstadt.de, the fire department recorded almost 80 storm-related operations until shortly after 7 p.m., 57 of which were in the Vogtland district alone and 20 in the neighboring Zwickau district. The operations focused primarily on the Göltzschtal and surrounding communities. The situation was particularly challenging for the volunteer fire department in and around Auerbach, which had to operate in a special situation due to the high volume of operations.
