Future or danger? Lithium mine in Altenberg causes excitement!
In the heart of the Saxon Ore Mountains, a lot is currently happening in the area of lithium mining. On June 24, 2025, the State Directorate of Saxony opened the process for the spatial impact assessment for the planned lithium mine from Zinnwald Lithium GmbH. This project, among other things, provides for the reduction of around 1.5 million tons of lithium ore per year, not only promises economic impulses, but also raises questions about dealing with the environment and residents. The district office Pirna reports that citizens can now view the application documents to give their statements by August 31, 2025.
The planned preparation system is built on an area of around 110 hectares in the Liebenau district, while the reduction of the ore is to take place below the traditional old mining in Zinnwald. In order to carry out the transport of the rockey to the processing plant, three variants for the approximately 10 kilometer route are considered that offer different access options. Experts emphasize that in the spatial cost test, which serves as the basis for the further merchant planning approval procedure, the effects on settlement development, transport, economy, agriculture and tourism must also be in focus.
public participation and statements
Citizens' initiatives are also active in the region, such as those that have formed in places such as Bärenstein, Cínovec and Liebenau. These groups are calling for a comprehensive integration of the population into the decision -making processes and have organized themselves to represent their interests. It is particularly noteworthy that a joint statement in the Czech planning approval process has been submitted in the past time in order to provide the EU's classification as a strategic project with the EU. This classification could accelerate the approval procedures and attract additional investments in the region.
Currently, further construction sites have been announced in lithium mining, and the company GeoMet S.R.O. Plans a significant increase in its funding to 3.2 million tons of lithium per year. Compared to Zinnerz in Altenberg in the 1980s, which was around 1 million tons, this would be an enormous increase in the 1980s. These developments also raise new questions and show the dynamics that the lithium sector in the region brings. The Easter Mountains Blog describes the ongoing approval procedures and the active role of citizens that are committed to non-transparent decision-making processes.
future and environmental impacts
It is important that the space compatibility test not only illuminates technical aspects, but also the environmental impact of the project. In a first step, the so-called scoping documents are checked to determine the effects on the environment. This is crucial to recognize potential risks at an early stage and incorporate into the planning. The data and statements for the examination can be viewed by the end of August 2025, both in the city administrations of the affected communities and online. The State Directorate Saxony has expressed itself on the framework of the examination and offers extensive information for the public.
How it goes on and what decisions are ultimately made remains to be seen. The participation of the residents, the position of citizens' initiatives and the environmental protection assessments will be crucial for the success of the project and for the acute concerns of the region. The next few weeks will show whether all votes are heard and which solutions are found to create a balance between economic benefits and ecological protection.
