Construction starts on September 16th for a new barrier-free intersection in Zwickau!

In Zwickau, road traffic will be redesigned in front of an important intersection from September 16, 2025. Extensive reconstruction and renovation work is pending at the intersection of Crimmitschauer, Werdauer and Humboldtstrasse. This measure aims not only to improve the traffic situation, but also to promote accessibility. According to the city administration will be the second construction phase include the barrier-free conversion of the crossing points.

Overall, a lot of work is planned: The ceiling renewal will extend into Humboldtstrasse, and during this time asphalt and track system work as well as renovation work on the sewer network of the Zwickau waterworks on Werdauer Strasse will also be carried out. In order to make the new sidewalks and crossings accessible to all citizens, curbs will be lowered and slabs with grooves and knobs for the walking and visually impaired will be installed Radio Zwickau firmly.

Detours and traffic routing

Particular attention is paid to diversions during the work. Humboldtstrasse will be completely closed between Werdauer and Bahnhofstrasse during the construction phase. Road users can bypass Werdauer Straße towards the Moccabar intersection via Stiftstrasse and Alte Reichenbacher Strasse. In addition, Crimmitschauer Straße will become a one-way street up to Moritzstraße in the direction of Kolpingstraße. A construction site light on Werdauer Straße remains in place and serves as a pedestrian crossing so that pedestrians can safely avoid the construction site.

The right of way at the intersection of Crimmitschauer and Moritzstraße will also be changed. Moritzstrasse receives priority. Drivers coming from the north are asked to drive via Carolastrasse and Stiftstrasse to Werdauer Strasse. Interestingly, the sidewalk on the side of the “Haus am Moritzbach” retirement home will be maintained for pedestrians during the work, which is certainly in the interests of the residents.

Progress and outlook

The first phase of the renovation began in mid-July and should be completed by November. The city of Zwickau is investing significantly in the transport infrastructure, not least to meet the challenges of increasingly dense traffic. The total costs for the barrier-free renovation work amount to just under 130,000 euros, with the city hoping for 75 percent funding.

So we can be curious to see how the intersection will change in the coming months. It remains to be hoped that the construction work will progress quickly and that all residents and road users can benefit from the improvements. At this point it should be mentioned that Free press reported that new road surfaces are also planned for the streets leading into it, which will make everyday use even easier.
