Chaos in the Erzgebirge: Violent storms with hail and storm damage!

On Sunday evening, southeastern Germany was hit by severe storms, with the Saxony region particularly badly affected. Extreme hailstorms occurred particularly in the Erzgebirge, especially in Zwönitz and the surrounding area. Loud View caused a supercell hailstorm that caused significant damage. Hailstones even reached sizes of up to four centimeters. Motorists sought shelter under trees, while a cyclist was surprised by the sudden hailstorm. The fire brigade was in constant operation and a special situation was declared in the districts of Bockau, Schneeberg, Grünhain and Zwönitz.

The heavy rains not only caused storm damage, but also water damage. Large amounts of mud and debris had to be removed from the affected properties. In Zwönitz, firefighter Jörg Zimmermann explained that numerous missions were necessary to deal with the damage. Larger hailstones could be found hours after the storm.

Consequences and outlook

The overall extent of damage caused by such extreme weather events should not be underestimated. Statistics show that the number of storm and hail damages is continually increasing. This results in a certain need for action for the affected regions.
