Football historian Hardy Grüne discovers Meeran's sports history!

Football has many faces, and one of them is currently in West Saxony. Hardy Grüne, an experienced book author and co-editor of the magazine “Zeitspiel”, is currently on the move to develop a new project. The 62-year-old, who comes from Göttingen in Lower Saxony, recently visited Meeran's sports history. He not only tasted the alliances and rivalries of football, but also presented his own passion on two wheels.

Grüne climbed the “Steile Wand” by bike, a striking climb that is closely linked to the name of Täve Schur, a cycling legend. On his way through this historically and sportingly influenced region, he encountered the traces left by various sports. What was going on in the historian's mind as he cycled through the landscape and followed the trail of Tunisian traditions?

A look into the history of football

Football has always been a central part of European culture, and the sport's roots date back to the 12th century. Planet Wissen reports that in Ashbourne, England, “Shrovetide Football” is played on Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday, an early form of the game that basically throws all the rules overboard. The medicine ball-sized ball is thrown into the crowd, and while the game lasts eight hours, the field is several kilometers in size, including a local river. It's hardly surprising that the authorities viewed such unregulated games as a threat to social order!

Football grew rapidly in England in the 19th century. If we saw unregulated folk football games in neighborhoods or villages, the influence of schools and academies marked a change. Beginning in the 1830s, public school teachers demanded that young players develop virtues such as fairness and team spirit. The first written rules for ball play were established in Rugby in 1846, a crucial development that led to the widely used Football Association (FA) rules from 1863.

The development of football in Germany

In Germany, football initially struggled with resistance. Konrad Koch, a high school teacher, took the initiative in 1874 and introduced the game in Braunschweig. The first football clubs soon emerged, bringing the game to schools and thus becoming more attractive. The founding of the German Football Association (DFB) in 1900 represented another milestone in German football history.

The German national team's first appearance on April 5, 1908 ended in a defeat against Switzerland. But despite these early setbacks, football in Germany continued to develop rapidly, and the first German championship took place in 1903, when VfB Leipzig defeated DFC Prague 7-2. This laid the foundation for a sport that still inspires and connects people around the world today.

Grüne, who in addition to his passion for football also has a close connection to British football, regularly travels to Great Britain to experience the culture and humor of the British people first hand. In 2018 he also took part in the End to End cycling classic, a route that covers over 2,000 kilometers from Land's End in Cornwall to John O'Groats in northern Scotland. The whole thing was immortalized in a book that includes impressive pictures and experiences from this trip.

The world of football, enriched by stories from personalities like Hardy Grüne, shows once again how deep the roots of this sport go and how it has developed over the years. It remains exciting to see what new facets and stories will emerge from his travels and projects.
