Hooligan attacks shake youth football in Saxony – police react!

Last weekend there was a shocking hooligan attack during a B-youth game between Erzgebirge Aue and FSV Zwickau in Grünhain-Beierfeld. Around 40 masked hooligans stormed the sports field and attacked around 20 FSV Zwickau supporters. Several people were injured in the clashes, including a 15-year-old who had to be taken to hospital. The referee was forced to stop the game when the score was 1-0 for Aue. As a result of the events, the sports court of the Saxon Football Association scored the game 2-0 for FSV Zwickau, and Erzgebirge Aue also had to pay a fine of 2,000 euros.

The security authorities are alarmed, especially given possible revenge actions by Dynamo Dresden supporters. According to police spokesman Thomas Geithner, the police will have an increased presence at the upcoming games of both teams. The B youth game between Erzgebirge Aue and SC Borea next Saturday will take place under police protection. The game between FSV Zwickau and FC Stollberg will not take place without the accompaniment of security forces in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Fear and measures

The incidents cast a negative light on FC Erzgebirge Aue, which not only has to deal with the consequences of the hooligan attack, but also with a damaged image. Sponsors, including the renowned vehicle manufacturer Porsche, have already expressed concerns and are calling for a comprehensive explanation of what happened. Aue has announced that the punishment will be passed on to those responsible to make it clear that such acts of violence will not be tolerated. But the current situation is tense and fears of further attacks remain.

In recent years, violence at sporting events has increased, which has led to a rethinking of security measures nationwide. For years, initiatives such as the Hooligan Concordat have been relying on special requirements for holding games, such as fans traveling on special trains in order to improve security. The Swiss Football League has also tried to create a welcoming atmosphere with its “Good Hosting” strategy instead of scaring away spectators with restrictive security measures.

Need for changes

Increased scientific exchange and comprehensive strategies are increasingly important to minimize violent conflicts. Findings from the Violence at Sports Events Research Center, which works specifically to improve the management of sports fans, are already being incorporated into practice and show how important preventive measures are.

It remains to be seen whether and how the security situation can be defused at the coming games. In any case, it is clear that both the clubs and the security forces are required to ensure a safe environment for all sports enthusiasts. In times like these, it is up to all of us to keep football what it should be - a place of excitement and cohesion.

This week we can already see how the authorities' security concept works in practice. The games are just around the corner and the hope remains that the situation will not escalate further.
