Mega construction site in Zwickau: Motteler Straße will remain closed until 2027!
A lot is happening in Zwickau right now, as the renovation of Motteler Straße began some time ago and will be one of the largest construction sites until 2027. On July 7, 2023, the starting signal was given for the extensive work, which extends over a section of around 360 meters. This part between Marktsteig and the “Heimattreu” allotment garden area will not only be modernized, but also redesigned.
The city of Zwickau has planned several measures in collaboration with the Zwickau Waterworks (WWZ) and Zwickauer Energiebedarf GmbH (ZEV). This includes the renewal of the wastewater and drinking water pipes as well as the laying of protective pipe routes. Once the construction work is completed, Motteler Straße will be used as a traffic-calmed area at walking speed, which will mean a massive improvement for all road users. The driveway will be equipped with a bituminous roadway and the side areas will be barrier-free with concrete paving. Natural stone round edges ensure a clear demarcation between the driveway and side areas, while new parking areas are created.
Division of construction phases
In addition to the work mentioned above, it is planned to completely renovate Motteler Straße between Wilhelm-Busch-Straße and Marktsteig by the end of the year. This road will be completely renovated over a total of around 500 meters in two further sections, which extend to the “Heimattreu” garden area. The costs for the first construction phase are 480,000 euros, which is an excess of around 40,000 euros compared to the initial calculations, which were approved at a meeting of the building committee. Fortunately, almost half of the necessary expenses are covered by funding, as Radio Zwickau reports.
Important information about the construction site
During the construction work, Motteler Straße will be completely closed in sections, although walkability for residents will always be guaranteed. Partial attention to waste disposal is also required: waste containers must be provided at the beginning or end of the construction site, with additional collection containers at the junctions with Christianstrasse and Marktsteig. Citizens are asked to remember the container numbers carefully to avoid misunderstandings. The entire construction project is expected to last until the end of April 2027 and is calculated with a total investment volume of around 757,000 euros. An ambitious undertaking that will certainly lead to a noticeable improvement in the infrastructure in Zwickau!
