Saxony's potato harvest: record quality and increasing yields!

The potato harvest in Saxony is going extremely well this year, as MDR reports. Ariane Weiß, managing director of the Saxon Potato Association, reported that potatoes have grown well all around and are being harvested in the harvest season from July to the beginning of October. The average yield is a typical seasonal 40 tonnes per hectare, and the quality of the harvest is classified as “very good”. This is great news for farmers who work diligently on their fields.

As luck would have it, Saxon farmers harvested enough potatoes from their domestic production this year to fully cover their own fresh potato needs. However, part of the harvest is further processed. The potatoes from Dennheritzer agricultural production in the Zwickau district, for example, find their way to the potato refiner Friweika, where they are transformed into delicious dishes such as gratins, dumplings, fried potatoes or potato pancakes. Potatoes are now cheaper in stores because producer prices are falling faster than consumer prices, which is fueling consumer enthusiasm.

The challenges of the industry

But despite all the joy about the harvest, it is also important to keep an eye on the challenges for the future. In Saxony, there is a particular lack of processing plants for fries, chips and starch, which reduces the recycling options. It has been pointed out several times that the industry needs new impulses and price promotions in order to really be able to assert itself.

Another important point is the quality of the planting material. As Landwirtschaft Sachsen emphasizes, the good professional practice of potato producers plays a crucial role. The responsible authority is responsible for checking the planting material for pathogens. The plant health department works closely with the plant approval body to avoid harmful pathogens such as bacterial ring rot or slime disease. Random laboratory tests are therefore commonplace to ensure quality.

The importance of potato cultivation in Germany

Viewed in a larger context, the economic importance of potato cultivation in Germany remains great, although consumption is declining and less and less cultivated area is being used. The figures from Landwirtschaft.de show that in 2023 a harvest of around 11.6 million tonnes of potatoes was achieved on around 264,700 hectares. Conventional production predominates, while only around 4% of the harvest comes from organic farming.

A lot has changed in the last few decades: average potato consumption per capita has fallen from almost 200 kg in 1950 to around 64 kg. The reasons for this include the increasing importance of grain as feed for pigs and the greater spread of imports.

Although the potato has lost acreage, yields have generally increased. This shows that good planning and care of the fields are crucial in order to continue to compete in the potato range and to set no limits to the love of the tuber. It will be exciting to see how the market and earnings will develop in the coming years.
