Special tour in the German Agricultural Museum: Discover animals at the castle pond!
On August 31st, the German Agricultural Museum in Blankenhain will open its doors for an exciting special tour that revolves around the topic of Himmelsteich. Starting at 2 p.m., participants can go on a journey of discovery that not only illuminates the castle pond itself, but also offers insights into the history of the fishing industry in the Schloss Blankenhain manor. Blick.de reports During this tour, visitors will also learn a lot about the fascinating creatures in and around the Himmelsteich, including otters and Egyptian geese from Africa.
The Himmelsteich, a typical still body of water with no superficial inflow, receives its water supply exclusively from precipitation and groundwater. Explained like this Wikipedia, that this type of water is often found in areas where precipitation exceeds evaporation. The formation of such ponds can be attributed to various natural processes, such as the mining of mineral resources or ice age remnants. A species-rich flora and fauna develops in undisturbed sky ponds, which are often adapted to anaerobic conditions - a true paradise for plants and animals.
Sustainable management of the water
The Himmelsteich on Hachtelsberg, a project initiated by NABU Großrinderfeld, is an example of an artificially created body of water that is also only fed by precipitation. Since 2022, the pond's water level has even been recorded here in order to collect ecologically relevant data, such as average daily temperature and solar radiation. NABU Großrinderfeld highlights, that the pond was designed as a spawning ground for amphibians, making it an important habitat for common toads and pond newts. The adjacent flowering meadow also serves as a food source for various insects.
Maintenance of the water is minimal; Reeds are only mowed when necessary. This means that a colorful diversity of species can establish itself. Butterflies, grasshoppers and wild bees cavort in the meadow - a sign of a healthy environment. The decision not to release fish into the pond also guarantees that the water quality for amphibians always remains optimal.
Next events in the museum
Anyone who is still curious about more events after the special tour in Blankenhain is in luck: the Wood and Crafts Day is on the program on September 7th, followed by the Central German Cheese and Specialty Market on September 20th and 21st. All events are accessible with regular museum admission, so the whole family can enjoy these experiences.
The Himmelsteich and the associated information not only offer an exciting insight into nature, but also into history and as a backdrop for upcoming events.
