Heavy rain leads to five accidents on the A4 – drivers remain uninjured!

In the last few days, the weather in Germany has been causing nerve-wracking moments on the streets. There were five accidents on the A4 in particular between Sunday evening and Monday morning due to heavy rain and the dreaded aquaplaning, as radiozwickau.de reports. Fortunately, everyone affected was uninjured, although the property damage amounted to tens of thousands of euros.

The first incident occurred on Sunday at 5:20 p.m. A 40-year-old BMW driver left the road shortly after the Wüstenbrand junction and crashed into the center barrier. The damage was estimated at around 3,300 euros. Only a short time later, around 5:45 p.m., a 38-year-old VW driver collided with the center guard rail on the opposite side - the aquaplaning factor was also obvious here as he also veered off the road to the left. The property damage amounted to around 5,500 euros.

Five accidents and extensive damage

The third accident occurred around 8:30 p.m. A 31-year-old BMW driver skidded in the adverse weather conditions and crashed into a Renault van and the right guard rail. This resulted in damage of around 11,400 euros. The fourth accident, about an hour later, involved a 43-year-old Audi driver who also skidded shortly before the Hohenstein-Ernstthal junction and collided with the center barrier, causing 6,300 euros in damage.

The latest accident occurred at 1:50 a.m. Monday morning. A 19-year-old VW driver left the road one kilometer after the Wüstenbrand junction due to inattention and damaged a warning beacon and a wildlife protection fence. The material damage here totaled around 10,700 euros.

Aquaplaning – an underestimated risk

Aquaplaning is an often unrecognized danger that not only affects old cars, but also modern models with electronics and all-wheel drive, as rnd.de explains. This phenomenon occurs when the tires “float” on wet roads and lose contact with the road. At this moment, the driver can no longer transmit steering or braking commands, resulting in a dramatic loss of control. Aquaplaning is particularly risky when grip suddenly occurs again, as vehicles can then steer uncontrollably in a different direction.

To minimize the risk of aquaplaning, drivers should reduce their speed in heavy rain and pay attention to warning signs. In certain places, such as bridges or curves, water can collect and increase the risk. Tire condition also plays a big role: Tires with sufficient tread and the correct pressure are crucial for safety on wet roads, as tuev-saar.de emphasizes.

In the current situation in Germany, where a dry summer turns into wet autumn days, drivers are particularly challenged. High speeds and wet asphalt are a dangerous combination. A simple way to increase your own safety is to check your tires regularly - so that your next adventure on the highway doesn't become a risk!
