Refurbishment of the Oldenburg Gleishalle is delayed until 2029!

The renovation of the historic track hall at Oldenburg Central Station will extend to two years, which will postpone the new completion date to the end of 2029. This is reported by the Mopo . The completion was originally planned for the end of 2027. The reason for the delay are unexpectedly strong corrosion damage on the steel components of the over 100 year old building, which was opened in 1915.

The renovation work on the three indoor ships started last year and are carried out by a steel construction company from Westoverledingen (Leer district). Connection sites and hidden areas of the steel carriers are particularly affected. Deutsche Bahn is investing around 80 million euros in the project, although the budget remains unchanged despite the extended renovation period.

extensive renovation measures

The foundations of the indoor ship 7/8 are currently being renovated, while in the first quarter of 2026 a renewal of the foundations on the platform 5/6 is planned. At the same time, the platform is extended from 228 meters to 277 meters to meet the requirements of modern train traffic. The successive restoration of indoor ships 3/4 and 7/8 is also integrated into the renovation plan to ensure security and aesthetics. All platforms are provided with contemporary equipment and digital passenger monitors, which is intended to increase the comfort for the approximately 25,000 daily passengers.

Christine-Petra Schacht, the city building councilor, was positive about the future of the track hall and the planned measures. Despite the problems, the city administration is optimistic that the valuable historical building fabric can be preserved. The track hall is not only a central transport infrastructure, but also has great historical importance, since the steel used was cast during the First World War.

part of the large infrastructure program

The renovation of the track hall is embedded in the comprehensive infrastructure program of Deutsche Bahn, which is considered the largest since the 1994 rail reform. The aim of this program is to make train traffic more sustainable and punctual and at the same time to achieve the traffic policy goals in passenger and freight transport. The focus of the program is the renovation of the highly contaminated rail network and the modernization of train stations Deutsche Bahn .

BUND and Bahn have found that all renovation measures are not only necessary, but should also help to solve bottlenecks in traffic and create future capacities. Digital solutions, such as the rollout of the European Train Control Systems (ETCS), are planned to increase the efficiency of the rail network.

The track hall is used as an example of change in the railway area, which also enables the focus on historical appreciation and modern requirements. The challenges of the renovation, as well as the planned renovations, show the significant contribution of Deutsche Bahn to improve the transport system in Germany.
