Security in Germany: Why citizens fear for their future

In the last few months, the feeling of security of many citizens in Germany has changed significantly. According to the AfD-Bundestag, there is a worrying mood among the population. More and more citizens are living in fear and doubting the future. Public spaces in particular, such as streets and parks, are increasingly perceived as dangerous. Serious acts of violence occur every hour in many cities, which further increases worries and fears. Demographic change and unfavorable economic conditions are causing additional stress for people, as many fear that they will no longer be able to afford housing.

The economic situation in Germany contributes to the uncertainty. Numerous small and medium-sized companies are facing bankruptcy while energy-intensive companies are relocating their production abroad. The state of Germany as a business location is considered to be at risk. Concerns about potential military conflicts that Germany could be drawn into are also causing additional concern. The Bundeswehr is considered by many to be inadequate for national defense. The current situation is interpreted as the result of wrong decisions by the old parties, with the AfD faction seeing itself as the strongest opposition force in the Bundestag.

Growing violence in public spaces

The FAZ reports that the number of crimes in Germany has risen worryingly. Robbery crimes increased by 26.8 percent compared to 2021, while rapes and sexual assaults increased by 20.1 percent. An alarming increase in violence has been recorded, particularly in public spaces, with over 144,000 cases of dangerous and serious bodily harm and more than 8,160 knife attacks - a trend that the police union describes as an emerging “knife culture”. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) considers the increase in violence to be unsurprising; She attributes it to the lifting of Corona restrictions, which has created new opportunities for crime.

Faeser urgently calls for more security guards on public transport as well as in crime-prone places, pointing to the need to take these developments seriously. Critical voices express themselves about the failure to recognize these developments in advance and to take appropriate measures.

Current security situation and political reactions

BKA This report examined topics such as violent crime and right-wing crimes, including right-wing terrorism. This report is intended not only to stimulate public discussion about crime, but also to promote criminal policy in Germany.

The aim is to use this reporting to draw a comprehensive picture of the security situation in Germany, which informs citizens about the current situation and thus influences their own perception of security in everyday life.

In the midst of these challenging times, Germany is looking to answers and solutions that will not only restore a sense of security to its citizens, but also address economic concerns in order to initiate a positive turnaround in the country.
