Altenburg selects monument protection award winners: A legacy is celebrated!
The monument protection prize will once again be awarded in Altenburg, which will make the hearts of culture lovers beat faster. The prize, named after the architect Johann Georg Hellbrunn, is being awarded for the 27th time this year and recognizes outstanding achievements in the field of monument protection. Unlike last year, when no prize-worthy proposals were submitted, this time there are three serious candidates in the running. Loud LVZ The hottest contender is ASE Real Estate from Leipzig, which has renovated a historic Wilhelminian style house at Heinrich-Zille-Straße 5.
This building, built in 1893 by Julius Graichen, has an eventful history and was empty for over 25 years. However, the renovation work was worth it: the ceiling paintings and stucco elements were carefully preserved and supplemented. What is particularly pleasing is that the original windows in the stairwell and the room doors on the ground floor have been lovingly restored. The use of modern air heat pumps and insulated apartment windows shows that old and new can be harmoniously combined.
The competition and the jury
But ASE Real Estate doesn't have the only nomination on its side. Another building at Kanalstrasse 30, where the facade was repaired, also impressed the jury, even if the renovation work here is less extensive. This could have an impact on competitive opportunities. The jury includes Andrea Schappmann, the sponsor's representative, Peter Müller from the building committee and Torsten Rist from the social and cultural committee. The jury discussed and decided on the award on August 12, 2025, reports ABG.
In addition to the buildings, Ines Spazier is also honored by the State Office for Monument Preservation and Archeology in Weimar. She is honored for her tireless commitment to saving and preserving cultural monuments in Altenburg. Spazier has gone beyond her official duties to support archaeological monuments and the public, thereby showing how important personal initiative is in monument protection.
Award ceremony and importance of monument protection
The announcement of the winner is planned for Friday, September 12, 2025, as part of the 21st Marstall Concert in the Brethren Church. This also coincides with the Open Monument Day and therefore represents a special occasion. The awarding of the prize not only promotes the appreciation of the cultural achievements in Altenburg, but also contributes to the preservation of the cultural heritage, as is the case financial support describes.
Monuments and historical buildings are not only part of the cityscape, but also a valuable cultural heritage. Their maintenance is often expensive, but various funding programs are available to help owners. These programs are critical to preserving the rare treasures of the past for future generations while strengthening tourism. Ultimately, work in the area of monument protection is not only a question of preservation, but also an opportunity for regional identity and the creation of jobs.
The coming weeks should be very exciting when the lucky winner of the Altenburg Monument Protection Prize is announced. It remains to be seen whether ASE Real Estate will win the race or whether Ines Spazier will receive the award for her tireless efforts.
