Life savers wanted: blood donation on August 26th at the Altenburg Clinic!

A central blood donation appointment is scheduled at the Altenburger Land Clinic on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Between 12 p.m. and 4 p.m., those interested can offer their valuable help in the donation center in the clinic's lecture hall. Registration is not required and donors can look forward to a small reimbursement of expenses. Two days before this date, the clinic is calling on the region to take part in the life-saving blood donation. The clinic's care mandate includes not only emergencies, but also planned operations and treatment in hematology and oncology. Newly given birth mothers also rely on transfusions, so the importance of blood donations cannot be overestimated.

The blood donations are organized in close cooperation with the blood bank team at the University Hospital Leipzig. In order to ensure that there are enough blood donations available, we also actively promote the motivation of potential donors. If you have any questions about previous illnesses or recent vacation trips, the blood bank hotline is available on 0341 9725393.

The need for blood donations

The need for blood donations can also be supported by global trends in transfusion medicine. In the United States, blood transfusion numbers, including about 15 million blood components transfused in 2019, have fallen thanks to patient blood management programs, such as MSD MANUALS reported. This shows that blood donations are an important issue not only locally, but also globally. Transfusions are generally very safe, but comprehensive information for donors and recipients is still necessary.

When donating blood, around 450 ml of whole blood is usually collected in special bags. Depending on the type of preservation, these can be stored for up to 42 days, which should always be remembered when it comes to the value of the donations. Transfusions also require careful compatibility testing to ensure patient safety.

Importance of Enlightenment

Education also plays a central role in blood donations. For example, before donating, donors must answer questions about their health and undergo a pre-screening to ensure they are suitable for donation. Negative health effects are very rare when handled correctly, which underlines the importance and value of blood donation.

For everyone who would like to help donate blood: Come to the Altenburger Land Clinic and do your part to save lives. Every drop counts!
