Milestone in theater renovation: 20 million euros for the renovation!

On September 10, 2025, an important milestone was reached in the renovation of the Altenburg State Theater. According to the current information from Altenburgerland.de The logistical development of the house and the renewal of the stage machinery have been successfully completed. Over 50 trades took part in the extensive construction work, and the total costs amount to an impressive 20 million euros, of which the Free State of Thuringia covered 15 million euros.

Unfortunately the theater has been closed since summer 2019. A significant problem is the fungal infestation in the ceiling area of the auditorium, which is delaying the reopening. Damage to the supporting structure was found, particularly in the area of the crown floor, where, among other things, a 500 kg chandelier hangs, which was carefully secured. As a result, the seats in the auditorium must remain expanded for the time being to allow access to the damaged areas. The 30-year-old ventilation and smoke extraction system has already been removed to begin the necessary renovation work, explained mdr.de.

Extensive renovation work

A lot of modern work has already been carried out in the theater building itself. This includes the renewal of the revolving stage, the stage floor as well as the sound and lighting technology. The orchestra pit was also enlarged and new fire protection systems were installed. A new passenger elevator ensures barrier-free access, while two truck lifts were installed near the stage entrance. The outdoor areas received new paving stones, which should benefit the overall appearance of the theater.

The boiler house has also undergone extensive renovation and is already open to the public again. Likewise, some parts of the administration building were replaced due to dry rot infestation, and three historical windows were refurbished, while others were rebuilt. Modern sanitary facilities and renovated electrical systems round off the completions.

Outlook and planning

Plans are underway to renovate the crown soil where the wood-destroying fungi and insects were discovered. This will have an impact on the load-bearing capacity of the building, especially in order to enable performances in the large hall again. The planning is currently in performance phase 3, with the aim of submitting approval at the beginning of November 2025 and then starting the Europe-wide tenders. Altenburg.tv informed that construction is aimed to start in spring 2026 and that the work should be completed by autumn 2027 at the latest.

The aim of a successful renovation is to ensure that the Altenburg State Theater can once again contribute to the cultural life of the region in the long term. Especially in view of the fact that the theater tent will no longer be available as an interim solution from mid-2026, rapid progress is essential. The anticipation of the reopening is growing - even if it still takes some time until the theater shines in its full splendor again.
