Faster to electrification: expansion of the central-Germany connection!

An important step towards better rail connections between Central Germany was recently taken: On July 2, 2025, the first working meeting of the “10th Steering Committee on Electrification and the Double-Track Expansion of the Central-Germany Connection (MDV) Weimar – Gera – Gössnitz” took place in Leipzig. The cross-party “Parliamentary Group Central-Germany Connection”, consisting of nine members of the Bundestag, would like to promote the expansion of this essential route. Politicians from the CDU, SPD, Alliance 90/The Greens and the Left sit together to set the course for the future of rail transport. [abg-net.de].

The Thuringian Ministry of Infrastructure plays a central role here. Despite financial challenges, it is planning to expand the railway lines as planned in order to significantly improve the currently only 40 percent electrified routes in Thuringia. As mdr.de informs, there are a large number of single-track sections on the MDV, which place a heavy burden on both commuters and travelers in general. Delays and waiting times for oncoming traffic are the order of the day here. In order to improve this, these single-track sections are to be expanded to double-track as part of electrification.

Important plans and challenges

The double-track expansion of the line presents a number of challenges for the project team. Not only 115 kilometers of line, but also 23 level crossings, 194 culverts, 138 railway overpasses and several tunnels have to be realized. An important point in planning is the benefit-cost analysis, which is intended to create a basis for financing the projects. This includes aspects such as passenger benefits, environmental impacts and operating costs. The results of this investigation are expected in September 2025. The railway is currently working on transforming the single-track sections as part of electrification and plans to refinance this using funds from the Municipal Needs Financing Act.

A central voice in this discussion is Olaf Behr from the Pro Bahn Alliance, who is calling for a clear roadmap to improve the rail network. He emphasizes that the offer must become more reliable and dense in order to no longer leave commuters and travelers in the lurch.

Technological innovations in rail transport

But not only the expansion of the routes, but also the innovative conversion to sustainable rail transport poses numerous challenges. Electrification requires the development of new rail vehicles with environmentally friendly drive technologies. And this is where the topic of digitalization comes into play. According to atlascopco.com, the integration of modern technologies into production and maintenance is essential. Through precise planning, automated manufacturing systems and predictive analytics, efficiency can be increased and downtime minimized. All of this shows that expansion and electrification not only represent progress in rail transport, but also a sustainable and future-oriented approach in the transport sector.

The developments surrounding the Central-Germany connection could not only improve mobility in the region, but also create new standards in infrastructure. The politicians agree that the Central-Germany connection should become a central part of Central German rail transport. It remains to be hoped that the necessary financing commitments will be made promptly so that the plans do not remain just on paper.
